Dr. Newman came to Ellis County in 1900 as a 24-year-old physician just one year out of medical school. His work in the county started at Grand, not on current maps of the area, but located about 20 miles southeast of Shattuck in what was then Day County. Daniels said, "is that it is Christmas time and the school was full of things the kids had made.
