MAKES A PERILOIS
AEROPLANE FLIGHT
%
WILBUR WRIGHT'S REMARKABLE
FEAT AT NEW YORK.
Salta Above Warships on the Hudson
and Ovar Land Fulfilling tha
Condition* of Hudson*
‘ Fulton Contract
Now York.—An aeroplane flashed
paat the white dome of Grant's tomh,
than turned gracefully in midair over
the waters of the Hudson, shot like a
falcon back to Governor's Island, ten
miles away.
Wilbur Writ ht of Payton. O. thus
placed his came In the rank with Hud-
son and Pulton in one of the most
spectacular (eats in the history of
aeronautics.
Over the masses of warships, from
whose decks the hearse cheers of the
sailors were Lome up to him In hla
elevmtcd seat, he flew for twenty
miles hack—remaining In the air for
thlrt)-three minutes and thirty-three
seconds and alighting at the aero
dome without mishap.
During the (light Luslness was prac
tlcally at a standstill In all parts of
Manhattan from which a view of his
remarkable performance was avail-
able. Harbor crafts shrieked their
applause, cheer after cheer swept up
from the banka of the Hudson and the
lower bay, for the Dayton aviator bad
“mads good," crownlg the aviation
program of the Hudson-Fulton celebra-
tion with a record.
Motor Crippled.
Wright started on his flight up the
Hudson at 9:fit! a. in., and finished ex.
•ctly at 10:29:33. He had Intended
to improve upon his achievement of
the morning by making a longer and
more hazardous flight at sunset, but
the crippling of bis motor just aa be
was about to start his evening at-
tempt dashed his hopes as well as
those of thousands who had assembled
on Governor’s Island and along the wa-
water front to cheer him on.
The flight was made under weather
conditions only moderately favorable.
Like a Clock.
At this point the aeroplane was fly-
lng at a height of nearly 200 feet but
unexpected air currents drove the
•viator to bring hls craft closer to
the water. Tilting the elevating rud-
der, he slowly brought the machine
down, sloping gradually until he waa
a hare hundred feet above the toot-
ing ferry boats and the busy river
traffic. Hla motor waa churning aa
regularly aa a clock and setting him*
self In hla seat ha aped onward up the
river. Over the warships of four
powers he passed, hls progress mark-
ed by cheers from the sailors of his
own country and those of Great Brit-
ain, Germany, France and Italy. The
blue Jacket! lined the rail* of their
ahlpa and gazed In wonder at the lit-
tle craft atove them.
When the air veasel reached the
Brit’.h cruiser Argyle, anchored an
e!~Vh of a mile above Grant’s tomb,
Wright brought hls direction rudder In-
to rtag. and, describing an easy and
graceful curve, started on hls return
Jourrev down the river. The wind
conditions which had bothered him on
the Journey were now more favor*
able and It waa here that the speed
possibilities of the machine were dem-
onstrated. While the ten miles up
the stream occupied nearly twenty
minutes, the return flight was made
In a little more than thirteen min-
utes. or at a rate slightly over forty,
six miles an hour.
Nearlnc the harbor entrance he be-
gan lowering himself and when he
reached the open waters of the bay
be was flying barely sixty feet above
the surface. Thence onward he grad-
ually lessened hla height.

A New York friend of Cutleura

"My three year old son and heir,
after being pat to bed on a trip across
