TEE phrase "cooperation with
God" appeared in a recent
appeal of the American Cancer
Society There is a religious as-
pect to the appeal that is so inter-
esting and noteworthy it warrants
brief mention for those who may
not have seen this particular
publicity release
Much of the cancer material
accomparwing the appeal was
prepared by a minister the Rev
Edwin Stewart of Meadville Pa
Mr S t ew a r t a psychologist
turned preacher has combined
his two occupations When par-
ents of two of his high school
Bible class died of cancer he was
aroused to action by the appalling
statistics on the ravages of the
disease One must be indeed
shocked when he learns that un-
less effective preventive meas-
ures intervene two out of every
three homes in the United States
will be invaded by cancer
To me the statistics seemed
Incredible but I suddenly real-
ized that my own home has been
one among the numerical "two"
in which early operation for-
tunately was successful also
three of my closest friends in
recent years have died frona the
disease
Mr Stewart's entrance into the
ministry had an interesting but
tragic beginning When he was
In training as a psychologist he
gave needed money to a college
friend a divinity student to go
home for Christmas The friend
was killed in a plane crash At
the funeral service the minister
conducting the service said: "One
of us who had dedicated himself
to Goclis lost Will anyone take
his place?"
a It was then that Edwin Stew-
art made his decision though he

God'
got his science degree before en-
tering the divinity school
It is as minister and scientist
that he says "We have to co-
operate with God if we expect
Him to answer our prayers"
Most assuredly cancer cannot be
conquered by prayers alone and
it is this realization that gives
emphasis to Mr Stewart's words
and his appeal
One of the most hopeful as-
pects of the cancer problem is
that while preventive measures
are sought in many instances the
disease can be checked and cured
In the early stages For this rea-
son the Cancer Society urges a
medical checkup once a year
Inevitably there must be the
question "why should there be
cancer and other scourges of
mankind?"
Recently I attended a movie in
which were the amazing pictures
of wildlife in the Okefenokee
Swamp Two friends were with
me One with an instinctive dis-
like of reptiles closed her eyes
The other sitting beside me fas-
cinated by the sinuous beauty of
the immense and deadly serpents
said to me quietly "Did God
make these?"
It is the question which the
English poet William Blake posed
long ago in his famous poem
"Tiger tiger burning bright"—
did He who made the lamb make
thee?"
As a sort of specialist in the
Bible I am wondering what an-
swer the Bible has to gite I am
not quite sure and perhaps others
can guide me I think that per-
haps the Bible's answer is its
insistence upon positive faith the
heavens declaring the glory of
God the sense of order and
beauty In the world the realities
that fear disorder danger a0
tragedy cannot disoel

Here was a wind-bitten saddle-

Frank smiled drawing a bat-

"She hooked me Tod Mind tell-

"The worst blackleg 'kind
Hungry ones"
Frank asked quietly "When it

how many hands can I count

"Three not figuring Miss Jean
or yourself Only she'll leave
Rickety to home on the drive"
"She told me to keep you be-

A strange inarticulate gurgle
caught in Tod Drury's throat and
he nearly pulled the fly netting
oft the window in spinning about
"Let me look in your face You
can't be tellin' the truth! That
old buzzard can't no longer fork
a saddle!"
"I'll probably ask Rickety to
drive the wagon"
"We'll see" he growled and
again turned to the window "I
could quit before I take such in-

"Did you figure maybe

those horses to McHenry?"
Tod's eyes bored at him "I

A hundred questions dragged
across Frank's mind that needed
answers
"Is she going to marry him
Tod?"
"No'I don't think so—as long
as I and Rickety have guns Took
her a little while to find out how
rank a man can be but that day
in Circle N ranch yard Milo
Hackett showed her Norring's
slick talk was all rotten She
won't marry him now"
Slowly Frank asked "What
were you doing in Norring's
ranch yard?"
"Delivering her cattle"
After that a dull silence held
until Frank broke it "Why de-
liver Rafter Cs to Norring? Had
she sold stock to Circle N?"
"Suppose" Tod Drury said
dryly "suppose you were to ask
Miss Jean that question"

It has been called to my attention of a
rumor being circulated that if I am elected over
my opponent the commodities would be discon-
tinued which is untrue Most people know that
these commodities are furnished by the Federal
Government not the county commissioner as
someone would have you believe It will be my
policy to co-operate with the Federal Agencies
in seeking relief for those in need
There will be more rumors circulated dur-
ing this campaign I want you people to consider
the source and why of these rumors

she understood then why a cer-
tain streak within her character
had rebelled against him He
cam into the room now as a
stranger
Her first words were held low
and soft "It was Emmett who
shot the horse from under the
posseman wasn't it? Then why
blame Frank Ude? Let's be real-
istic Steve"
"They were riding together
Your brother has your horses
And tide was with him when
they were stolen"
Not even Norring could lie
holding such a straight face He
believed what he told her and if
he believed it then it was true
This was news to her confirming
her worst fears "So Emmett is
going to fight me to the last
ditch?"
He nodded 2-gely " have had
everything else thrawn at me I
hope you don't blame me be-
cause Emmett's turned outlaw"
SHE knew he said this because
he still felt some guilt for having
taken the Alhambra from Em-
mett But she said honOstly "No
Steve"
"You've sacrificed everything
Your cattle are gone— thrown
away to pay for his losses If I
hadn't moved my steers onto
Rafter C you'd have 'strange
brands fattening on your grass
now"
Her expression became consid-
erably firmer "Your beef isn't
here by my Invitation"
He smiled dryly brushing her
rebuff aside with a careless ges-
ture "Your notes stretch beyond
the normal limits of realistic in-
vestment for the bank—"
Once again she broke in ignor-
ing L talk "Where has Emmett
camped this time?"
"Yates's homestead Haven't
you heard the old saw about like
begets like?" Her eyelids were
lowering dangerously a warning
he shouldn't ignore "This Is Only
what I overhear Jean My bar-
tenders catch talk haven't
mentioned the Yates place to the

"Steve each time you come
here you are more saloon keeper
and less banker"
