STANDARDS EXPERT
VISITSflVERSITY
Dr Franklin Meyer of National
Bureau of Standards Pleased With
Local Prospects
not allowed to enter the Contest
The Oklahoma School Herald pub-
lished by V E Danner B A T2 is
co-operating with Dr Scroggs and is
devoting space to current events each
month In addition to this the ex-
tension division is publishing a series
of six bulletins on current events
which will be distributed to contes-
Dr Franklin Meyer of the natiojj— tarts
bureau of standards visited the uni
versity last week-end for an inspection
of the Btate bureau of standards which
is being established in Monnet hall
under the direction of Dr W P Ilase-
man head of the department of
physics
While in Oklahoma Dr Meyer vis-
ited the state corporation commission
with the view of offering the aid of
the national bureau of standards
where help is needed He was very
enthusiastic regarding the state bu-
reau and the university
“Work in establishing the state bu-
reau of standards is being held up
because we have been unable to get
necessary equipment If everything
goes well and war emergencies do not
interfere too much with our work we
expect to have the bureau established
and in working order when school
starts next September” said Dr
Haseman
It is planned that there will be
equipment to test almost every com-
mercial measuring device in use in
Oklahoma when the laboratory is
complete There will be devices to
test gasj water and electrical meters
and almost every imaginable sort of
scales and measurements There will
also be equipment to make fuel tests
Sometime in the near future the
bureau will require the entire time of
one man who will do all routine test-
ing The bureau will be at liberty
to call in the aid of the technical and
scientific faculty of the university to
make any special investigation or re-
search The stale bureau of standards was
established at the 1915 session of the
legislature under the supervision of
the president of the university The
1917 session appropriated $8500 for
equipment
The field is so large that 15 topics
have been selected and in the final
contest each entrant will draw a' sub-
ject and be given a short time to
prepare This will necessitiate
thorough preparations on the whole
field
