UNIVERSITY ACTIVE
Fifteen Have Been Organized Since
1197 Four Women's and Four
Men's Clubs at Work
Fifteen literary societies have made
their appearance on the campus since
not the year 1 but since the year of
97 Of these there are four men's
and four women’s societies still in ex-
istence The hoary patriarch of them all is
the Senate Literary society which was
organized in 1897 by 20 men of the
university
The year after the establishment of
the Senate the Forum Literary society
was organized Two houses and
women members was part of the or
iginal plan In 1911 it was incor-
porated under the laws of the ter
ritory and was the only literary soc-
iety in the state with a charter
The Websterian '"Literary society
which was added to the roll of men’s
literary societies in 1903 was or-
ganized by preparatory students
After the passing of the Prep school
Freshmen and Sophomores were made
eligible for membership The Web-
sterian became affiliated with the
Forum till 1916 when it was or
gaaised to include all the men of
Forum and it became a four year soc
iety
The House of Representatives was
organized in 1905 with membership
opea to third and fourth year Pre-
paratoiy men and to Freshmen in the
university After the Preparatory
school was discontinued Sophomores
became eligible for membership
The youngest and also one of the
most successful of the men's literary
societies is the Athenaean The soc-
iety was founded in 1915 by Oklahoma
City high school boys who did not
wish to stay over and attend meeting
on Saturday night The first year of
its life the Athenaean had 50 per cent
of the varsity debaters and orators
and the next year they raised it to
80 per cent
Among the men's litetary societies
w hich have made their appeal ante in
Soonerland but are now discontinued
we find the name of Pierian This
society was established in the early
history of the school for men who had
previous experience In debate and
public speaking The Ciceronian lit
erary society was active' only in the
year 1909 Two technical literary
societies have been founded the
Pkarmo-Medic literary society or
ganised in 1905 and discontinued in
the spring of 1900 and the Engineers
literary society which lived three
years after its institution in !‘’0!

society ws organize! in 1901
