Tiir scavenger wagons are doing
good work in carrying off big loads of
garbage.
Till: New York democracy are split
on the plank in the tariff bill known
as the "income tax.'* It is a split that
will make N\ w York republican in
spite of hades and nigh tide.
If the information will do the dem-
ocrats any good we will let it be
known that ex-President Harrison
will be in the field for a renomination.
Almost any man among the republi-
cans will curl Mr. Cleveland up like a
cigarette.
The democratic senators have been
whipped into line on the tariff bill.
Many will be compelled to vote
against their convictions. The origi-
nal bill is so changed that Wilson will
never recognize it. There is wailing
and gnashing of teeth among the dem-
ocratic senators.
% The Coxeyites are taking to bal-
loons. A lot of them left Harrodsburg
Ky., in an airship Thursday last.
When they get there, the originator
of the >« heme, one Springer, will
hand over to Mr. Com y *1.000. It
looks a little now as if the whole af-
fair was "up in a balloon."
Mil- Lf who says that she is in
the bands of her dressmaker, is be-
coming dangerous. She says that if
she had been in Coxey's place she
would have entered the capital. Well,
tthat good would that have done?
Aud, furthermore, who cares whether
she entered or remained in the hands
01 her dressmaker outside?

The city scavenger under the san
itary olllcer is invading the lots and
yards and rapidly getting away with
the tilth and garbage that has Accu-
mulated for months. Several wagons
were engaged on 1> street early this
morning and they were loaded to the
brim with some of the filthiest refuse
matter that ever came under the
horrified eyes of an observ< r of (he
city needs.
One look at the loads was suflicient
to convince anyone seeing them that
in its removal and destruction a le-
gion of deaths had been prevented.
And there are fowler sewers yet to be
cleansed. I'he city will not be safe
until every nook and corner of the
municipality is investigated, and la-
bor should not be allowed to cease
until the good work is completed, and
when completed, the work should be
considered only as begun.
The place that will be emptied to-
day will be refilled tomorow, so it re-
quir* s watchfulness and constant vig-
ilance to preserve the health of the
• ity to which nothing is more danger-
ous than the foul e me nations that
came frein the long standing garbage
barrels of restaurants and other of
tin* unameable aud nasty sources that
are liable to curse and endanger every
community on the globe.
Intelligence comes to us every day
that many of the oldest municipalities
of the north and east are plague
stricken, and that an invasion of
epidemic is threatened that is liable
to spread to heaven only knows what
extent. These epidemics will prove
vastly more dangerous than the Cox-
ey bands, even if their pathways were
lighted with the horrors of the torches
of revolution with such evils truces
may be had, but where death himself
leads the sepulchral host there is no
truce, there is 110 fight, it only re-
mains to lay down supinely and—die.
Clean up the city, then, and keep it
clean. Bastile every man and woman
for that matter, who fails to observe
a Li. the rules of the sanitary depart-
ment. Have 110 compromises with
them. Lt the order to clean up be
instant and the execution instanter.
This is the plai e, and now is the time
for sanitary otticers to be merciless
in the execution of their duties to
know no frineds and to fear no foes
but to tear down and tear up. wipe
out and tetotally extinguish every
death-generating and obnoxious ele- 1
ment in the comtuunin .
