For thousands of other persons, its demise should bring bring a loud, "Good riddance." As of 11:03 a.m. Saturday, trains no longer will necessarily hold up all motorists at the Reno and Byers feed-off of I.H. 35 and I.H. 40. The passing of this memorable though unloved situation should bring tears. Now, the Draper Expressway will provide a sky ride over the railroad tracks for 1.77 miles. Eventually, it will take motorists clear to Yukon as I. H. 40. It was a teeth-chattering 29 degrees at dedication eremonies Saturday morning, but chances were Stanley Draper didn't notice that at all. A mayor, a governor, a lot of old cars, a couple of fire trucks, a high school band and several hundred citizens turned out for the event held at the site of a dedicatory maker in a grassy plaza at S Robinson, just south of the elevated expressway. Cars Moving at a leisurley pace on the elevated expressway backed up more than seven blocks as the three lanes of traffic that entered the crosstown from the east tried to squeeze into one lane to exit on the west end. The highway patrol and city police said the congestion at the one-lane exit should not be much of a problem during rush hours Monday since motorists will be using both the west end and the exit on S Robinson. (T-2-4-72) If the Oklahoma City public works department had a dollar for each time some motorist couldn't find Classen after exiting at that sign, it could extend the boulevard to Red River. Trouble is nobody thought it would take so long to build three more blocks of Classen when I-40 opened in 1965...Pat Brian, bond engineer, said the 1972 bond package to be sold July 1 will include the Classeb extension. After that, Brian estimates it will be Oct. 15 before all details are finished and the city has the money in hand to hire a consultant to design the project...Give or take a little while either way, that sign should be valid, honest guide by early summer, 1973."
[Photograph 2012.201.OVZ001.6464]2020-06-15T07:12:56-05:00https://gateway.okhistory.org/ark:/67531/metadc1700522/

Photograph used for a story in the Oklahoma City Times newspaper.
