Grass, Legume and Forb Cultivation

Description: Photograph of an hour’s run with the 5 foot combine of high quality pure Indian grass seed with J. W. Bell, of Tuttle, OK, holding a handful of the seed. This 80 acre field was seeded to pure Indiangrass in 1952 and 135 pounds of pure seed per acre was harvested in the fall of 1955. Note the sand pile in the background showing previous wind erosion damage to this field of Class VII, soil unit 70, RP (rock phosphate). Refer to photos OK-175-1 thru 5. OK-175-6.

Grass, Legume and Forb Cultivation

Description: Photograph of J.W. Pell, Cooperator, harvesting a seed crop from a pure Indian grass planting made in March of 1952. Seeding was made on Class VII, 70, RP (= rock phosphate) soil that was abandoned and had been subject to severe wind erosion. A light grazing of this 80 acre field was done in 1954 and 1955, removing the cattle in July 1955, permitting the grass to make good seed crop. 25 acres of this seeding was actually harvested, averaging 135 pounds of seed per acre. Description: Photograph of a part of head cut on a large, deep gully on Ionine Creek Site 3. The back of the photograph proclaims, "Part of head cut or overfall on large gully, Sec. 17, T9N, R8W. Overfall is 73 feet deep, 270 feet wide, and advancing 70 feet per year from 1937 to 1955. This produced 31.7 acre-feet of sediment annually."

The main gully has moved upstream at the rate of 70 feet per year for the past 18 years. It has a depth of 73 feet and a width of 270 feet at the head. Gully is 90 feet deep at deepest point. This gully system produced sediment at the rate of 72 acre-feet per year for the period 1937 to 1955."

County Road Before Improvements

Description: Photograph of conditons of county road prior to the construction of a road fill to be paid for jointly by the farmer, Count Commissioner, and the ASC in cooperation with Grady County SCD. See later photo for the site after construction. This road was used for school bus route, mail route, and Grade-A milk route. See photo OK-135-10 for condition of bridge at this crossing.

Dam Site During Construction

Description: Photograph of gully has been bulldozed in, shaped, sloped, and an erosion control da, with a 24-inch corrugated pipe installed. The dam required 10,000 cubic yards of fill and the pipe was placed at the elevation of the floor of the finished grade of the valley. The dam is deigned to store 5 1/2 inches of runoff for the 136 acres drainage area. Auxilary spillway is not expected to be used except during a 100-year frequency rain. Wooden Bridge

Description: Photograph of 55 foot span of wooden bridge the County Commissioner had been attempting to maintain and replace for school bus route, mail route, and Grade-A milk route. Bridge ws dangerous for heavy loads and expensive to maintain. A combination road fill and stock water pond was planned at this site; see OK-136-9 for road approach and see later picture for completed structure.
