Dam Site During Construction

Description: Photograph of gully has been bulldozed in, shaped, sloped, and an erosion control da, with a 24-inch corrugated pipe installed. The dam required 10,000 cubic yards of fill and the pipe was placed at the elevation of the floor of the finished grade of the valley. The dam is deigned to store 5 1/2 inches of runoff for the 136 acres drainage area. Auxilary spillway is not expected to be used except during a 100-year frequency rain. Grass, Legume and Forb Cultivation

Description: Photograph of J.W. Pell, Cooperator, harvesting a seed crop from a pure Indian grass planting made in March of 1952. Seeding was made on Class VII, 70, RP (= rock phosphate) soil that was abandoned and had been subject to severe wind erosion. A light grazing of this 80 acre field was done in 1954 and 1955, removing the cattle in July 1955, permitting the grass to make good seed crop. 25 acres of this seeding was actually harvested, averaging 135 pounds of seed per acre. OK-175-1.

Description: Photograph of an hour’s run with the 5 foot combine of high quality pure Indian grass seed with J. W. Bell, of Tuttle, OK, holding a handful of the seed. This 80 acre field was seeded to pure Indiangrass in 1952 and 135 pounds of pure seed per acre was harvested in the fall of 1955. Note the sand pile in the background showing previous wind erosion damage to this field of Class VII, soil unit 70, RP (rock phosphate). Refer to photos OK-175-1 thru 5. OK-175-6.

Banks were sloped and channel solid sodded to Bermuda in spring of 1941. Drainage area from cultivated field approx. 60 A. Mr. Landrum (in photograph) says this gully was very active and threatening his cultivated land but since establishment of Bermuda erosion has been practically stabilized."
