Barnett Farm Corn Crop Success Due to Dam on Owl Creek Watershed

Description: Photograph of Leroy (Buck) Barnett on farm. Although he had tried every year for seven years he had bee on the place he had not been able to make a crop on the 12 acres of bottomland. Each year floods wiped out his efforts. However, this time his crop of corn was undamaged in spite of the 15 inch rainfall of May 10-11. His field is immediately below Dam 5 on Owl Creek. Barnett Farm Corn Crop Success Due to Dam on Owl Creek Watershed

Description: Photograph of corn on Barnett farm on Owl Creek which was not flooded out because reservoir held water. Will average 40 bushels to acre. Spots will make more that that. Before dame was built, Barnett never got a crop off land. If he hadn't had the dam this year, he wouldn't have had any crop left, Barnett says. SCS Engineer Harry Maricle in picture.

Barnett Farm Storm Success Due to Owl Creek Watershed Dam

Description: Photograph of Leroy Barnett viewing flood damage the morning of May 11 at 6 a. m. with water coming over spillway of dam which is partly visibel at upper right. Rainfall had been most intense during early hours. Water continued to flow over spillway until late morning. Burnett here surveys with satisfaction his undamaged water gap fence which each year previously hea had been forced to replace after floods.

Detention Reservoir

Description: Photograph of detention reservoir; D.A - 490 acres. Permanent pool - 1.15" runoff with 10.0 acres surface. Flood pool - 4.56" runoff with 29.4 acres surface. Total storage 0 5.71" runoff from 490 acres. Flood pool (10' in depth) discharges through an 18" metal pipe at rate varying from 29 c.f.s. to 38 c.f.s. Both pools were empty but were filled during storm of May 9-10 and 1.0' depth.
