Episcopal Deacon Dave Pendleton Oakerhater and Reverend David Sanford

Description: L to R: Reverend David Sanford and Deacon Oakerhater at Whirlwind mission. Dave Pendleton Oakerhater, known as O-kuh-ha-tuh, or Making Medicine, was a Cheyenne warrior along with many other Native American prisoners at Fort Marion, St. Augustine, Florida in 1875. After training in New York, he was ordained a deacon at Grace Episcopal Cathedral, Syracuse, New York. Deacon Oakerhater served thirty-six years at Whirlwind mission before officially retiring.
