An Oklahoma City man was killed late this morning when he drove onto the Rock Island crossing at 500 N Portland in the path of a 3,000-ton freight train. The driver was identified as John Wilson Smith, 65, of 2109 SW 60. A Mercy Hospital physician said he suffered massive head injuries. Officer Ron Place said he found no skid marks and couldn't estimate the driver's speed. The impact knocked the northbound car 65 to 70 feet farther north and demolished it. Robin Landry, 23, Shawnee, front brakeman on the 84-car freight, said he saw the car seconds before the crash. Landry was riding in the first of the train's two engines. he said it happened about 11:20 a.m. "We saw him coming," Landry said. "He didn't slow down. He didn't even stop. We were blowing the whistle and the lights were going."The next thing you know we herd this thud and glass flew up. He just bounced off." Landry said. Landry said it took two blocks for engineer John D. Row to stop the train. Eastbound to Oklahoma City from El Reno, the freight was to be released as soon as police work was completed."
