Water Conservation; Water Erosion; Flooding and Prevention

Description: Photograph of Messrs. J. E. and V. F. Ritter repairing the damage to fences on the Zimmermann farm after the flood of July 15, 1959. Note the larger boulders in the road; they are all that remain of large dumps of rock placed there for road improvement by the county commissioners. Description: Photograph of a 17-inch pipe on the backside of Site No. 11 Long Breach Watershed Project discharging water from 14 days of periotic rainfall. The back of the photograph proclaims, "Pipe on backside of Site No. 11 Long Breach Watershed Project discharge under from the 17" pipe. From July 13 to 26, 16" of rain fell on this watershed and the water went around the emergency spillway on July 15 following 11" of the rain in 44 hours for about a 3 hour period. Major Spillway

Everything worked perfectly and no damage to the bermudagrass cover in the waterway. About 100 to 150' of nativegrass above the permanent pool contour was damaged by standing water during this rain period. more

Grass Rotation

Description: Photograph of 20 acres Cornado sideoats planted Feb, 1948 in cultivated rows. It was fertilized and cultivated 1300 lbs. of certified seed was harvested Oct. 1958 or 65 lbs. per acre. This seed was used to seed 68 more acres of cropland and overseeded some poor stands of native grass pasture.
