Watershed, Flood Waters Sans Bois Creek

Description: Photograph of Cecil Presfield driving amphibious car returning Mrs. Jim Presfield home from work along with the Presfield children and neighbos Dan Condo's children home from school. During floods Sans Bois Creek overflows into the Grassy Lake area cutting off all access roads. They must use boat, amphicar, or horses to cross the 10 to 12 feet of water over the roads. Bees

Description: Photograph of Claude Webb, and K.C. Bennett, SCS Representative, proudly display a few bees from the 70 bee hives on the Webb farm. Bees are a most important factor in the pollination of soil conservation legumes. This is a very economical way, according to K.C. Bennet, to get more and better returns from legumes in a planned soil and moisture program. Bees feed on vetch, sweet clover, peach and other blossoms on the Webb farm. Webb sold around $500.00 worth of honey last year.

Wolf Eradication

Description: Photograph of a rack of 24 wolves and coyotes killed by plane and dogs. Shot and wounded from a airplane and caught on the ground by dogs. These wolves and coyotes are eliminated because of the damage they do to chickens and calves. They also rob the nests of ground birds of eggs and young birds. The eradication of the wolves and coyotes in this photo is being done by the Welch, Okla. wolf hunters Association.

Pasture Management

Description: Photograph of Fescue-Ladino mixture on soil unit 4. Fescue crowded out by clover, resulting in danger of bloat. Cooperator and SCS technicians agreed on method of planting clover width of drill, leaving strips of fescue with no competition from the clover. This pasture was drown out in the May flods.

Description: Photograph of Southland Brome seeded in October of 1954, using approximately 6 lbs. per acre. 200 lbs. of rock phosphate per acre applied at seeding time. Mainly for bulk and ease of seeding. July 1955 200 lbs. of cleaned certified seed per acre was harvested from this 12 acres and all but 300 lbs. was used to increase this type of planting to approxomately 300 acres on the entire ranch. Description: Photograph of Wilson DeGroot and wife packaging strawberries. Good soil management makes strawberries. Contour rows, fertilization and check-row cultivation has simplified labors. This "pick-em-yourself" four acre project grossed $1,600 in 1960. Over 2,000 people picked for home use according to DeGroot. This retired bricklayer says his hobby is interesting and profitable.

Extensive Growth of Vetch

Description: Photograph of left to right, Henery Heman, District cooperator, WUC, SCS K.C. Bennett, and Bart Brewster, neighbor. Brewster is shown admiring the extensive growth of vetch on the Heman farm, while Heman proudly looks on. The vetch is a common occurance now in Ottawa County with approxomately 60,000 acres grown annually. The vetch was practically not known before the beginning of the district in 1946.
