Description: Photograph taken for a newspaper owned by the Oklahoma Publishing Company. Caption: "Established in 1883 by Lt. Matthias W. Day from the Pawnee agency. Two companies of "Buffalo" soldiers were quartered at Camp Russell. Here Oscar Halsell threatened Lt. Day's life if a steer butchered by the camp was not paid for. On December 24, 1884 a forty man detachment was sent from here to oust W. L. Couch and his "Boomers" from the Stillwater area. The "Boomers", 225 strong, refused to be arrested and Lt. Day returned to camp and called for reinforcements."
