Sandstone Flood Personal Observation

Description: Photograph of Ott Fowler, Mgr. , Red Rock Ranch, perched on top of the corral fence on the ranch. He has watched the Sandstone Flood Prevention Project from the beginning. He summed it all up when he said, "Floods have stopped, yields are better, water is plentiful, fishing is tops and wild turkeys and beavers are numerous as well as other small game. " Fowler said "the wild turkeys use the top rail above the corral gates as their roost. "

Description: Photograph of a turkey nest with 13 eggs. This nest has been built in an old abandonded road protected by a diversion terrace. The road blew full of Russian thistles and turkey nest was built. Wild turkeys have made a considerable increase on Sandstone watershed in the last 3 years.

String of Fish from Sandstone Creek Watershed

Description: Photograph of a sting of fish caught by Clarence Fowler, Rancher, out of Site 4, Sandstone Creek Watershed. These 6 bass and 1 channel cat weighed a total of 26 pounds. Fowler has fished in Canada, throughout the Northwest part of the U.S., and in Colorado-he said, "This is the best fishing area in the country right here on Sandstone." Fowler keeps a record of fish caught, the record shows 285 lbs. caught during period March 15 to May 15, 1960.

Description: Photograph of mowing a Johnson Grass Meadow. A 27 acre bottomland field that is subject to overflow. “From May 1 to July 10 I had 34 head of beef stock on this grass,” said Earl Fish, “and the last of July, I got a hay crop that yielded at least a ton to the acre. I let the stock stay on the grass until about August 5 and I am now getting my second hay crop.
