Contour Farming

Description: Photograph of a broken terrace as the result of a large rain. Terraces were too small and although level, the channels were quite irregular--fills are not of sufficient height--soil very sandy and the experimental tile drainage system with open inlet was used to drain the terraces. Breaks are on the tile drainage. This area is northeast of Oklahoma A&M [i.e., Oklahoma State University] Experimental farm near Perkins. OK-9-528.

This photograph was taken from the north side of Oklahoma Highway #53 1.1 miles west of junction with Oklahoma #40. The back of the photograph proclaims, "On north side of highway Oklahoma #53, 1.1 miles west of junction with Oklahoma #40. Shows how tree roots hold soil even after all the surrounding soil has been eroded away. The roots have acquired a bark-like texture."
