(CITY PILOT SURVIVES CRASH OF PLANE INTO--- A 37-year-old Oklahoma City man was injured Thursday when an aircraft he was taking on a test flight crashed in a creek just east of Expressway Air park in Oklahoma City. The pilot was identified as Estel W. Husted, 6405 Connaught Court. He was listed in fair condition at Mercy Hospital, suffering from hand and knee injuries, facial cuts and a possible fractured jaw. Husted, operator of an aircraft maintenance firm at the airport at 3101 NE 63, was taking the single-engine Beechcraft Bonanza on a test flight after completing repairs on the aircraft, Buck Fillinger, airport manger, said. Fillinger witnessed the crash and was the first person to arrive at the scene The aircraft landed up-side down in the creek. One wing was sheared off at the fuselage. Husted had managed to open an escape hatch and partially crawl out of the plane by the time Fillinger arrived. Fillinger said Husted, who appeared to be in shock, managed to talk to him and tell him he didn't think he had any internal injuries. Husted took off on the test flight shortly before 2 p.m. The aircraft reached an altitude of about 300 feet and made a sharp left turn, Fillinger said. "That's when I knew he was in trouble," Fillinger said. "I heard the engine sputter." Husted turned back north toward the airport, he said. He managed to circle in an effort to land in a southeasterly direction near the airport runways when the crash occurred, Fillinger said. "I'm not sure exactly where he was attempting to land, ...
