Contour Farming

Description: Photograph of strip cropping with Lespedeza, soy beans and corn. Unterraced field. This view is to be compared with OKLA 5310, which shows a nearby field which has the same soil and is about the same slope, but which is planted in straight rows up and down the slopes and the cotton is very poor, as, in this season of very slight rainfall, what did fall was kept on the contour-farmed field, but was lost on the other. OK-5311.

Description: Photograph of Bermuda grass seed. The seeding and fertilizing rate was 1/2 pound hulled NK-37 Bermuda seed with 125 lbs. 10-20-10 per acre at seeding time. Seed was mixed with fertilizer and planted in shallow furrows 18 inches apart with an EZEE-Flow fertilizer spreader with “Pray” furrowing device attached. OK-894-10.

Planted in 4 inch flat furrows 16 inches apart. 2 pounds of seed per acre. 150 pounds of 10-20-10 fertilizer applied per acre at time of planting. Grass was 12 inches high 6 weeks after planting. 50 cows and 23 calves turned onto pasture on July 6, 1958. Soil Mapping name--Stidham very fine sandy loam. Badly eroded abandoned cropland.
