Caption: "Traffic snarled for blocks Thursday morning, as roadblocks halted the normal flow of vehicles at the intersection of SW 59 and Pennsylvania. A water main broke Wednesday and repairs continuing Thursday were slowed down because of the rain. Workers reported water was filling up the hole and hampering repairs. Meanwhile, motorists in the right-hand lane found it even more difficult to squeeze into the other lane of traffic. A police officer was sent to direct traffic."

The going-home traffic jam at the intersection has become worse as city motorists detour the Classen Traffic Circle. Officials said the morning rush-hour flow is uniformly smooth, but a "major tieup" occurs during the 4-to-6 p.m. traffic rush. The blockade there is apparently the only major bug developing so far in the experimental left-turn blockade at Classen Circle, officials said, urging drivers to find alternative routes."

A five-car pile-up in the 1600 block Northwest Expressway injured two persons Wednesday and created traffic headaches for hundreds of drivers at NW Expressway and U.S. 66. The accident involved six cars, but only five were damaged. the sixth car stalled in the north lane, and four other cars stopped behind it. Another car, driven by an El Reno man, slammed into the rear car, causing a chain reaction. police officers investigating the accident had a difficult time filling out accident reports because cars caught in the middle were hit by two vehicles."

Caption: "North Robinson - Oklahoma City's do-it-yourself freeway - became a monumental bottleneck during Wednesday morning rush-hour traffic. Device controlling the directional flow between NW 30 and NW 36 went haywire, resulting in a sea of jammed traffic and one accident. Police said signals flipped to command two northbound lanes, instead of indicating the usual two lanes south for the influx downtown. Caption: "Failure To Heed a sign - this one a business sign, however, instead of a traffic sign - may have helped cause this three-car collision at NW 23 and McKinley Thursday morning. The accident occurred, as the accusing sign upper right shows, in front of Oklahoma Safety Council office. Slick roads made it hard to be safe Thursday, however. More than 30 accidents occurded during a three-hour morning rush period, city police reported. Sand and salt crews were almost as busy as they were Wednesday, rescuing stranded motorists."
