Help FAQ - About Newspapers
Do you have a list of all the newspaper titles in The Gateway?
How do I find Oklahoma newspapers by county?
Go to our Explore Resource Types page and select "Newspaper." When the results list opens, click on the "Counties" filter in the left sidebar. Sort the list using the commands in bar above the list or jump to a particular county by typing the county name in the "What are you looking for?" box at the top of the list. Then select any county that interests you. You can also search for specific counties by using the Advanced Search Form. Enter the county name in the form's "Place Name" box, scroll down and select "Newspaper" from the "Resource Type" list, and then click the orange search button.
How do I find Oklahoma newspapers by city?
You can look for newspapers in a particular city by using our Advanced Search Form. Enter the city name in the form's "Place Name" box, scroll down and select "Newspaper" from the "Resource Type" list, and then click the orange search button.
How do I tell what dates you have for a newspaper?
Go to the Explore Titles page and click on the newspaper title that interests you. When the next screen opens, click on "Years" in the left sidebar. You will see a list of years with the number of issues available in The Gateway for each year.
How can I make the newspaper text larger and easier to read?
Use our zoom interface. In the reading pane, click "zoom" in the toolbar at the top of the pane or "Magnify..." in the left sidebar. Some search results lists also allow you to open a page directly in zoom view. Learn more in our Magnifying (Zooming) guide.
Can I turn keyword highlights on or off?
Yes. At the top of the reading pane, click "tools/download," and then click "Highlighting On/Off." In zoom view click the highlight prompt in the toolbar at the top of the screen. To learn more, please see our Controlling Highlights guide.
How can I cut and save a particular newspaper article?
We don't currently have bounding boxes for the many different sizes and shapes of newspaper articles in The Gateway, so it's often difficult to cut and save an article alone. You can, however, use our zoom interface to magnify or reduce a rectangular portion of a page and then save it. Learn how in our Magnifying (Zooming) guide.
You provide a citation for the whole newspaper issue, but can I get a citation for a particular article or page within that issue?
Our system does not generate citations for individual newspaper articles, but you can get a citation for a page. Navigate to the desired page in the reading pane, and then scroll down until you see "Reference the current page of this Newspaper." Click the "Copy Citation" button and then paste the citation into your document or program. Learn more about our citation style in our Citing guide.
How can I find obituaries?
Very often, newspaper obituaries appear under column headings such as obituary, obituaries, or obits. To find obituaries across all the newspapers in The Gateway, try entering the term obit* in the basic search box on our home page, selecting "Newspapers" from the "Any Type" dropdown list, and then clicking the orange search button. Bear in mind that obituaries or similar content could also appear under headings such as death notices, in memoriam, etc., so you may need to search with those words as well. To find an obituary for a particular person, try searching the name, date, and heading simultaneously. For example, to find the obituary for James Bears Heart who died January 25, 1882, enter "james bears heart" +obit* +1882 in the search box. You can learn more about searching techniques in our Guides.
