Historia
About the Collection
Historia was published quarterly by William P. Campbell of the Oklahoma Historical Society between 1909 and 1922. Publication was suspended from the fall of 1917 until January 1919 due to World War I. Historia was distributed free of charge to OHS members and donors. The format of the publication resembles a community newspaper. Each issue contains descriptions of accessions and donors interspersed with informal articles on a variety of subjects. Much of the material was written or compiled by Campbell himself. In 1921 the Oklahoma Historical Society decided to launch The Chronicles of Oklahoma, which was edited by professional historians and overseen by a publication committee. Campbell was determined to continue publishing Historia, even raising subscription prices to help cover the costs, but the final issue appeared on July 1, 1922. Campbell died two years later, on May 4, 1924.

Historical publications may include offensive language, negative stereotypes, and descriptions of traumatic events. These materials are presented as part of the historical record. Historia was an early publication of the OHS, and while we recognize its historiographical value, this content does not necessarily represent the viewpoints of today’s Oklahoma Historical Society.
