Davis, I. T., Mar. 3.—The l ew«n thing
In ••bootlegglna ' has Just come to light
and lias created gretit surprise, even
among the old officials. The scheme is,
a good one. and ha* lieen worked suc-
cessfully for several month*.
It Will be remembered that some time*
" last lummer, near Herbert, an old huck-
ster peddled whiskey In th© axles of his
wagon, but was finally caught and land
ed in jafl. The latest plan, however l-s
mure daring and If posslblo more diffi-
cult of detection.
At a grading camp near Davis, it was
generally known that "booze-' could hv
hod, but no one seemed willing to tell
where they got it. An officer was sent
there to locnte the guilty party. It was
i oticc<$ that on certain Jay* one of the,
teamsters would make a trip to Gaines-
ville, Texas, and would always t:ike on'
each arm a huge pair of howe collars.
At first this did not creute suspicion. The
team he used was a big one. and the col-
lars appeared to require mending. Imme-
diately following his return to camp the
officer noticed more or less gaiety and
louvl talk in *very tout throughout tho
camp. During the day he would k**p
close lookout for bottles, etc. Nothing
of the sort could be found, although there
■was "booze' in evidence. Finally the

drove a large team and frequently took

Ties baen arrested for the killing of* Al-
toart Reynolds near this city last month
Ilia preliminary trial Is set for -next
Monday. The Times-Democrat publish-
es the following stocy of the crime
Readers will recall mention of the ac-
rfeiaotal death of one Albert Reynolds
at tho rock crusher east of town on Sat-
urday, February 4th. The report that
reached town and was accepted without
quwtlon, wns that Mr. Reynolds had
dipped on the Ice after stepping from
the dining tent, the fall fracturing hi'J
f-kull, ami dteatli ensuing almost instant-
ly. Those In authority at the crusher
had no reason to doubt this version of.
Mr. Weynold*' death, as none of the la-
borers Intimated any knowledge to the
contrary, and the deceased was according-
ly taken to his former home in Kansas
far burial.
In the pursuit of til* ofTiclal duties,
however. Sheriff Pumroy began to s is-
yiclon that "things are not what they
seem,** and ha quietly began an Investi-
gation. Step by step Mr. Pumroy fol-
lowed U£> whaA at first gave but slight
of uncovering anything, until
lie ftnally secured sufficient Information
to . lay the matter before County Attor-
ney Goflley. Two or three rock crusher

tlemen and on Saturday afternoon last
a warrant was issued for one James

who haa been working at the cruaher
for some time, and the man wad ar-
retted by Deputies dinner and Wler-
mae. The arrest was necessarily hasten-
ed by Information that Baird was to be
discharged Saturday night, and

Wright has been directed by the secretary
of the interior to proceed at once to
i collect all taxes and damages from the
telephone lines operating hi Indian Ter-
ritory. The inspector is .10# sending out
! notices to all delinquent companies and
! if they do not comply with the law within
the next two or three weeks, suits will
! \)n filed against them to compel them to
discontinue business h the territory and
I they will bo subject to criminal prose-
cution besides having their lines remnv-
1 r-d. There ur* ovor twenty companies
that have not paid any tax on lines or
exchanges although they have been re-
1 paatedly requested to do so by the lnte-
1 lor department. The department has
therefore decided to authorize Inspector
Wright lo notify the compani*^ of their
delinquency and take immediate steps
