Ei> News:—Speaking of the contro-
versies in Woodward, a funny one
arose the other day between two of
Woodward's most prominent society
gentleman. They are both engaged
in "business" in the town and a mis-
understanding arose between them,
they were discussing the question, look-
ing to an amicable adjustment of the
difference.
It seems that some difficulty was ex-
perienced in the settlement of an ac-
count for merchandise sold by one
and delivered to the other. The debt-
or. (flowing somewhat excited, said to
the other: "Your conduct, sir, is un-
pardonable. and your persistence is
unethical." The creditor replying,
saiil: "That's all right; but my whis-
key is as good as you can get any-
where." Then said the debtor, "Why
do my customers kick so much about
it and call it by such vile name?" I
was not looking for what followed,
and I tell you it looked like war when
the creditor said: "My folks are as
good as anybody else's." Thinking
so too I left, not so much afraid of a
light as I was of the whiskey.
Moving further along down the
street, I came upon two of Wood-
ward's young society swell-. They
were engaged in a tierce quarrel, their
difference being which more nearly
wore his clothes and combed bis hair
like Oscar Wilde. These young men
are room mates and I advised them to
retire to the privacy of their room and
settle the difficulty a la Wilde. I
guess they did. They said they would.
Not a great ways further I met two
of \\ oodward's most charming ladies.
They were also engaged in a contro-
versy and both were in an ugly mood,
their dispute being a geneological one.
I left, knowing that the question could
never be settled, except by the good
God above.
These are only a few of the cunt ro
versies that arise in Woodward, some
of which I will tell
Occasionally
Kate Field, who is always saying
clever and timely things, has a word
of advice for the sweet girl graduate.
"Dear graduates," she says, "cook
ing is the alphabet of your happiness.
1 do not hesitate to affirm that this
republic, great as her necessities are
in many directions, needs cooks more
than all else. The salvation of the
national stomach depends upon them.
We are a nation of dyspeptics and
Americans are dyspeptics because
they eat the wrong foods, badly-
cooked, which they drown in
ice water. They are dyspeptics be-
cause our women do not know the
rudiments of their business and resign
their kitchens into the hands of in-
competent servants, of whom they are
afraid and whose impudence they fre-
quently endure through their helpless-
ness. Be cooks ilrst and anything
you please afterwards. On you pos-
terity waits."
