Miss Lena Price and Mi's. Harriet
Price filed damage suits against the
Santa Fo railroad in the district court
yesterday. Miss Price lives at Wood-
ward. She alleges that she had been
an invalid and had come to Wich-
ita for treatment. While still very
weak she started for home with her
mother. They had some dispute with
the conductor, who put them off at
Derby. It is charged that the trunks
containing the medicine were carried
on and as a result. Miss Price was set
back in her recovery several months.
She asks $10,000 damages. Mrs. Price,
her mother, asks $5,000 damages.—

Married—At the Carey Hotel in
Wichita, Kansas, May 80th at 8 p. m.,
Mr. S. B. Jones to Mrs. Maggie Slade.
Mr. Jones is a prominent cattleman of
Higgins, Texas, and has extensive in-
terests in Woodward and Woodward
county, where be has many friends
who joins with the News in extend-
ing congratulations. We take the
following from the Wellington Daily
Mail of last Friday:
S. B. Jones, a prominent live stock
dealer of Higgins, Texas, passed
through the city this morning wreathed
' irpetual smiles. He had been to
lita where he had secured a beau-
tiful bride, Mrs. Maggie Slade, and
the happy couple were on their return
to Higgins. Mr. Jones is one of those
good-natured fellows whose good na-
;ure Is only exceeded by his rotundity.
He represents such men as the world
should have more of.
Our. old friend, Bill Hutchinson,
came to town Monday morning and
when he drove up in front of the office
and asked to be helped out of the
buggy, we at first thought he had been
out with the deputy marshals trying
to reform Dick Yager, but he soon in-
formed us that ho had seen a rattle-
snake, not, however, until the snake
had seen him. Dr. Workman was
called and prescribed the usual rem-
edy, after which Bill explained how it
happened. He was sleeping on the
ground near the house oh the Holman
ranch, fifteen miles southeast of Wood-
ward, on Sunday night when the
n came up. He hastily donned
his clothes, gathered up his bed and
barefooted hurried into the house. As
he passed through tho hall he felt
something sting his foot, but thinking
it nothing more than a lizard sting,
began making his bed, but in a few
minutes his foot began swelling, and a
search revealed his snakeship ensconc-
ed in an old shoe. As there was no
"snake medicine" nearer than fifteen
miles, other remedies were resorted to.
The place was cut open with a knife,
after whieh turpentine, saltpetre and
water were tried. After several
hours the swelling was cheeked, not,
however, until the foot was twice its
natural site. He returned home Mon-
day evening, bat will be laid up sev-
eral days,
Arthur Ellis, of Mexloo, Mo., a
brother of County Surveyor Ellis, is

Col. Andrus, of tho Alva Chronicle,
was in the city last week, and has the
following to say of a Woodward enter-
prise:
j. a. stine * co.
Immediately after the opening, these
gentlemen, as the agents of the Pabst
Brewing Co., begun the erection of
cold storage plants at Alva and Wood-
ward. Work was pushed as fast as
workmen could be engaged and both
buildings were finished inside of thirty
days. Wo have frequently visited the
Alva plant and to most of our readers
a description is not necessary About
a week ago it was our good fortune to
visit Woodward, and accompanied by
the Messrs. Stine, to go through the
cold storage plant at that place. It is
complete. The capacity of the build-
ing is probably double that at this
. It contains at this time about
tons of artificial ice, while tlie
cold rooms are filled to the ceiling
ith liquid refreshments. The stable
an immense affair and one of the
most complete we have ever seen.
The soda bottling house is a feature:
it is filled with the latest improved
machinery for manufacturing and bot-
tling pops, an immense quantity of
which is turned out daily. This firm
are the only wholesale dealers in cigars
letween Wichita and New Mexico on
this line of the Southern Kansas.
They have also built up a large trade
in spirituous and vinous liquors, sa-
loon fixtures and glassware. Their
trade extends from Wellington, Kan-
sas, to the Panhandle points. Wood-
ward is the supply point for the terri-
tory to the south and west, while Alva
attends to the northern Territory.
This firm is deserv*" "

is resulting in their financial success.
