A frightened team in east Woodward

nesday morning. No damage was done.
By report we learn that in Butler
county, Kansas, that corn and grass
are good, but cattle and hogs are short.

Geo. Carr lias purchased Jeff Raw-
don's rituge in Day county near
Inland. The latter will become a resi-
dent of Woodward county this fall.
J. Rawdon, one of the handsome
bachelor catdemen from Iolaud, was a
pleasant caller at this office on Aug.
14th, and renewed his subscription.
Lige Lynch, of Mobeetie, passed
through Woodward Monday, Aug.
17th, on his way home from Kausas
City, where he had been with cattle.
Two big native two-year-old steers
branded O bar are missing from Spring
Valley ranch. Keep your eye out for

in Blaine county this year. They say

A large rattle snake was discovered
in Bob Benn's house on Aug. 18th, by
one of the small children. One of the
older members soon came with a hoe
and killed it.
J. R. Ward, one of the leading cit-
izens of the Gage neighborhood, and
one who is well posted on currant
events, was an agreeable visitor at our
sanctum Aug. 14th.
Miss Amelia White, from Higgins,
Tex., who is on a visit to her brother
Jno. White at Richmond, and Miss
Ada Lewis, were the guests of Mrs.
Walker on Aug. 15th.
Attention is called to the fact that

Tom Wilson is one of the main stays
of the Womans Christian Temperance
Union of Kiowa, which is another

We learn from different reports that
cattle are perishing from starvation on
the ranges in Arizona. In Verda
county the loss is greatest, as the
mesa is said to be entirely bare.
County Treasurer Wiggins and
County Clerk Doran wont to Gage

Owing to an accident (?) to their bug-
gy they were detained over night.
Burk Chapman, nephew of Mrs.
Chapman S(aley, arrived in Woodward

business with his brother C. R. Chap-

August 18th and re-listed his cattie as
a member of tile Oklahoma Live Stock
Association. He reports cattle in flue
condition. He promised to be here at
the September convention and wants
to dunce in the head set at the cattle-
man's ball.
A few of our cattlemen have made
sales, among them, R. H. Estill, C. F.
Riddle and Tims. Curran. Mr. Hiddle
sold 30 head this week to a party
Harlier county, and we are told the
price paid was $35 per head for three

um, who is running a feed barn at

3eo. Edwards and Jeff Rawdon
closed a deal on Aug. 20th whereby
the latter becomes the possessor of
the former's three-fourth undivided in-
terest in the Bull Creek range. Con-
sideration paid, $1,000 cash. Mr. Ed-
wards will (ake his stock to Greer
county again, where he has good
range.
As we go to press the parties who
attended the conncil convention at
Grand are returning From them we
learn that Bro. Harry Smith received
the nomination for this council district.
The News congratulates Bro. Smith
on the honor. It will now be in order
for him to s(ate his views on (he great
issue, the financial question.
The News is in recipt of a letter
from Brig. Gen. Clarence Poston who
is now in Kansas City organizing a
company to put in water works and
light plant in Woodward. The letter
states (ha( (he company is formed and
is now only waiting permission from
the people here to begin work. Ben
Key is interested in the matter.
Everything south of Childress on the
Fort Worth A Denver road is burned
up. In Clay county all stock water
has been exhausted and the farmers
are hauling water many miles. Around
Wichita Falls water is so scarce that it
is being hauled there in tank cars and
out their parts well, and lb* I
was an appreciative one.
Master Paul Doran, about six years
of age, came up from Woodward
Friday last. The flrat thing he told
his father, who was here visiting, was
about a boy baby being born at Wrod
ward. He said the little fellow hol-
lowed as soon as he could get his
breath, and while the doctor wasn't
certain, it was thought he hurrahed

John McGrath has announced him-
self as a candidate for sheriff of Wood-
ward county. The people of that
county could not do better (ban give
this office to Mr. McGrath, as he is
fully competent to carry out the duties

Chas. Parker, while resisting arrest
by the sheriff of Clark county. Kas.
and 8. H. Nay, was shot and taken
to the hospital at Wichita, Kas. some-
time in July. While receiving treat-
ment for his wounds at the hospital,
he escaped. He was captured about
Aug. 10th, on (he border of New Mex-
ico, by Ihe sheriff of ('lark county, and
will be (aken to that county for trial

The series of lectures for the beneAt
of the Normal students are meeting
with great aproval by all, and the one
on 8a(urday night was well attended.
The subject "Patriotism"' was well
bandied and delivered in Judge Dean's
peculiarly, attractive style. The dec-
lamation of Miss Bessie Ixtngdon was
listened to with interest as well as the
music rendered by the Moss family.
The latter was especially Ane,including
the song, "Marseilles" by Col. C. V.
Moss.
