Ou the average farm it will not cost
over fifty cents each to keep a small
flock of laying hens. Will, fair treat-
ment they will average 100 eggs each

per hen. If 20 per cent of the eggs lie
used in the family, and for hatching
to keep up the stock, we still have II.
left as an offset to the fifty cents worth

fifty cents which is It*) per cent profit.
The eggs used and the droppings may-

Soil houses so inexpensive, and easi-

best poultry houses. They may be
plastered inside to prevent lice mites

is one of the very best, and one that

There were some fifteen or twenty
gentlemen present and us lliey could
not agree us to the origin of the day,
ihey ilid agree as to the eating <>f
turkey, and one suggested that it
should be called Turkey ilav.
It is true, oilier nations kepi a day
nf thanksgiving. The Jews feast of
raberiiaelce was a thanksgiving day.
|.'or eight days the people did not work
but spent their time in eating ami
drinking. The ancient Greeks and
Unmans had their after harvest festi-
vals. but tliev were held in the month
of September and tradition can In no
way connect them with our more
modern Thanksgiving day.
in the year 1622our Pilgrim Fathers
suffered a great deal with sickness,
mid were visited by a long and contin-
ual drouth which dried up their corn
ami barley, and famine semeed to stare
the Pilgrims in the face, A day of
fasting and prayer wan appointed, and
for nine hours the people prayed un-
ceasingly. At evening the sun set in
clouds, a breeze sprang up, and in the
morniug the ram was pouring down.
The crops revived and there was a
bounteous harvest.
For this, a day of thanksgiving was
ordered by Govenor Bradford.
During the revolution a day of
national thanksgiving was annually
recommended by congress, Atter the
constitution was adopted, Washington
appointed such a day and several other
esi.lenls did the same.
In isii:i Abraham Lincoln made a
'ocluiuatinn for national observance
ami since then a proclamation lias ls>en

November being set aside as Thanks-
