New York. Sep,. 5 -The only direct
news from ,he sea, of war bearing |
Sunday's date, came by way of Tokin j
In a report from Field Marshal Oyama, j
saying that IJao Yang fell completely
ln,o the hands of the Japanese at 9
o'clock that morning, that the Japanese
casualties were believed to be heavy
and that nothing was known by the
Japanese concerning conditions on the
right bank of the Taltse rtver.
The only comfort for the Russians at
home was the news, conveyed In a re-
port from General Kuropatkln, dated
Saturday afternoon, that General StaU-
elberg's First Siberian army corps of
25,000 men, reported Saturday as hav-
ing been out off to the westward of
Ltao Yang, had been safely extricated
and that the corps has succeeded in
Joining the main Russian body on the
right bank of the river, but no details
of the escape of Stakelberg are know t,
neral Kuroptakin also reported that
the greater portion of his uriny was at
the time of filing the report, south of
Yental (ten miles northeast' of Llao
Yang) and a few miles from the Yen-
tat mines, where fle.ee fighting had
been In progress.
It Is intimated that there has been a
cessation of the fierce fighting. Kuro-
patkin reports that his men were not
being much interferred with hy the Ja-
panese in the neighborhood of his army.
In St. Petersburg ,he absence of
news is looked upon as heightening the
gravity of the situation for the Rus-
sians.
It was reported In St Petersburg
Sunday night that Kuropntklc had ar-
rived in Tiehling, which is ten miles
north of Ventai and eighteen miles
south of Mukden.
