Law Against Footbell.
On the statute book of Scotland is
still an act passed in 142f ordering
that "na man play at futeball," be-
causa it is "esteemed to be unproflt
able sport for the common gude of
the realme and defence thereof."
There is also a statute against alien
immigration, passed in 1426, and au-
thorizing "all his majesty's good sub-
jects" to "take, apprehend, imprison
and execute to death the said Egip-
tians (Gypsies), either men or
Department of Agriculture.
While it is universally admitted that
the administration of the Department
of Agriculture is probably the most
effective in the world, it is interesting
to note that this service costs the na-
tion far less than that of other coun-
tries. A German paper states that
Russia expends annually for this pur-
pose as much as the United States
and France, Austria and Hungary
about 18,600,000 each, while America
spends but $6,000,000.
Loses Reason, but Not Wealth.
Some years ago a very wealthy
man in England got it into his head
that he had lost all his money. To
pacify him his sons told him that
they had saved the remnants of the
estate and were able to offer him
employment as a clerk. At $7.50 a
week he worked as happy as a prince
for the last twenty years of his life.
When he died his estate amounted
to nearly $15,000,000.
Why Sand Sometimes Sings.
Singing sands are composed of
hell-rounded and polished grains of
fairly uniform size, quite free from
dust and small particles. They "sing"
when struck or subjected to friction
Their sounds are varied, according tc
the nature of the friction and the
quantity of sand. A tingling sensa
tion is often felt by those who walk I

Clever French Roguef.
Among the French coins which arc
tio longer current are, as is well
known, those of a less value than 5
francs, struck prior to 1852, and near-
ly everybody has had a difficulty in
making them circulate. But now
their progress has been made com-
paratively easy and that by a very
simple means. The head of Napol-
eon III was uncrowned and that ren- !
dcred them easy to be distinguished. ;

The Oroyo railroad, which now runs
from Callao to the gold fields of Cerro
de Pasco, is considered one of the
wonders in the Peruvian world. Com-
mencing in Callao, it ascends the
narrow valley of the Rimac, rising
nearly 5.000 feet in the first fifty-six
miles. Thence, it goes through the
intricate gorges of the Sierras till it
tunnels the Andes at an altitude of
15,645 feet, the highest point in the
world where a piston rod is moved
by steam. This elevation is reached
in seventv-eight miles.
