to hor complaining of a very aore
back and desired that she pray for its
cure. This Mrs., Jackson did. but the
woman again appeared before her and
declared that the back waa still In a
bad condition. Mrs. Jackson Advised
the use of an application of Iodine,
and brought out a bottle of the drug
to apply upon the afflicted part of the
woman'a anatomy. But she regarded
the bottle auspiciously and acted aa
though It would hurt her were ahe to
use it. To allay her fears upon this
score Mrs. Jackson applied some of
ths drag to her own Unger and ahowed
her that It would not born, and that
ahe had better allow her to put aome

"Bat," said the woman, "It would
do no good."
"How so?" Inquired Mrs. Jackson,
sympathetically.

while the salary of the consul general
at Singapore is $4,500.
. Mr. DuBois has made a fine record
in the government service. He was
appointed United States commercial
agent at Aix la Chapelle November t.
1877, and three years later was pro-
moted to the grade of United States
consul and assigned to duty at Callao,
Peru, but declined that position.
In November, 1883, he was appoint-
ed United States consul at Leipzig
and served creditably at that post for
three years, when he resigned to re-
sume journalistic work in this coun-
try. In November, 1897, he returned
to tbe consular service as United
States consul general at 8t. Gall.
Swltserland, where he remained until
July, 1901, when he was summoned to
Washington to assume the duties of

New York.—The Empire clock, which
J. Hadden Overton of Woodstock has
shown to King Edward, Is an Ingenious
contrivance for giving practical instruc-
tion in geography and enabling the
student to ascertain at a glance the
mean time In any part of the world.
At first glance this wonderful clock
might be mistaken for one of the or-
dinary globes used in schools. Its prin-
cipal novelty Is an invisible clock,

PRESIDENT TAFT AND HIS FAMILY IN THEIR WHITE STEAMER
When the announcement waa made
aeveral months ago that Mr. Taft
would use an automobile dttrlnr bis
term a* President, much rivalry de-
veloped among tbe leading manufac-
turers for tbe honor of selling blm a
car and the public watched with in-
terest to aee what Mr. Taft's choice
would be. The knowing ones predicted
that the White Steamer would be se-
lected and they pointed out that Pres*
dent Roosevelt bad used White Steam-
ers for two years at his summer home
at Oyster Bay and had recommended
this make to Mr. Taft aa the most de-
al rable.
This prediction proved correct, al-
though Mr. Taft did ncft *ely solely
on Mr. Roosevelt's recommendation,
but with his usual thoroughness, de-
termined to have an investigation
made of all the principal makes. Ac-
cordingly, he asked aeveral officers of
the War Department to look Into the
matter for him, and they tested many
makes of cars, visited a number of
factories so that they might see what
materials were usett, and, finally, they
