Strychnine is very rapid in its ac
j tion and is dangerous to other ani
I mals as well as rats. Strychnine
j sulphate is the best form to use. The
: dry crystals may be inserted in
Ismail pieces of raw meat, bologna
I or "toasted cheese and placed in the
j rat runs or burrows.
Arsenic is probably the cheapest
poison but its effect upon the rat is
not always successful. If a rat sur-
vives one dose it will very rarely
j take another. Powdered white ar-
j senic may be fed to rats in almost
any of the baits mentioned under
barium carbonates and strychnine.
Another method is mix twelve
parts by weight of corn meal and one
part of arsenic with whites of eggs
into a stiff dough. An english form-
ula is as follows: "One pound of
oatmeal, one pound of coarse brown
sugar and a spoonful of arsenic, mix
well together and place in an earthen
jar. Place a spoonful at a time in the
; frequent runs of the rats."
Well fed rats r.ature rapidly,
breed often and raise large litters, j
Poorly fed rats on the other hand re-
■ produce less rapidly and have small-!
er litters. Keep the waste food from j
the table and the waste feed about pi€aS€ JOU.
