Heart Claim
Is Challenged
y
AUCKLAND, New Zimlund < AI*> — A spoket.m;in for
Auckland's Greenland Hospital Monday challenged a
claim by Souih African surgeons that they had per-
formed the world'* first double heart valve transplant us-
ing human valves.
The Johannesburg General Hospital said the opera-
tion, believed to be the world's first, was performed on a
woman last Tuesday. She was in satisfactory condition.
A spokesman for fireenlane Hospital's cardiothoracic
surgical team said surgeons at fireenlane performed the
first double valve transplant using human valves three
months ago and have done seven more such operations
klnce then.
Six ol the patients are still alive, the spokesman said,
changing an earlier statement that all eight operations
had been successful. He declined to give details of the pa-
tients.
The spokesman added that surgeons at fireenlane
had performed double and even triple replacements us-
ing metal or plastic valves since 19K5

Inrtisdlc acting as his own
lawyer, filed a W'rit »rf ha-
beas corpus on grounds he
was denied his right to ap-
peal, even though an indi-
gent.
The court said it ihen
contacted Anderson’s of-
fice and gave permission
for the trial record to be
filed late, but that as of
last Wednesday there still
was no writipn brief filed
supporting the appeal.
It said Dimsdle repotted
he ihought three errors
v ere made in his case, and
that the punishment was
excessive.
The court issued a sepa-
rate order in (Ilenn’s case,
holding that he also must
have a lawyer other than
the public defender
Jordan commented Mon-
day that he had read
Dimsdle's trial record “a
jillton times, and intended
to brief it. but didn't want
to file a frivolous brief."
"That guy has seven wit-
nesses who positively iden-
tified him." Jordan said
"Thev may find some re-
versible error, hut I don't
think they will in either
case."
He said Dimsdle. who
was tried first, appeared
as a w itness in (ilenn s
case "and adtnilted the
robbery and tried to ex-
onerate the boy
Of ih<* court's conclusion
that he had not "adequate-
ly represented" the pair,
Jordan commented. ' This
is true — I had overlooked
the fact that I was bound
to brief it and I ium made
a bmeboo."

Dr. Barnard Visits Pope
VATICAN CITY (AP) - Pope Paul VI and Dr. Chris-
tiaan Barnard, thp heart transplant pioneer, met Monday
in the pontiff's private library, a week after a Vatican
newspaper contended heart grafts raised serious moral
questions.
The South African physician said on his arrival in
Rome Sunday he did not intend to discuss moral aspects
of heart transplants with the pope. He told newsmen
there were no moral obstacles involved in the two grafts
he has performed.
The view that transplants raise moral questions was
advanced in the weekly L'Osservatore della Domenica by
a leading theologian, Rev. Ferdinando Ltmbruschini.
Barnard's visit was treated as a normal private audi-
ence. There was no special reception for him. no Swiss
Guards to greet him and no ceremony of any sort.
