In Landslide
KINSHASA, the Congo (AP) — Tons of rain-sodden
earth, shaken loose by a tremor, thundered onto a vil-
lage near Bukavu and buried alive its 200 inhabitants,
government officials reported Tuesday.
The disaster occurred early Monday morning, but
the region's remoteness delayed the news until Tuesday.
President Joseph D. Mobutu declared a day of na-
tional mourning and sent his "deepest condolences to
neighbors of the stricken village in the Nvangezi region,
15 miles south of Bukavu in the easternmost province of
KK The village, named Kazipa, disappeared in the land-
slide. government sources reported. Its inhabitants were
Bashi tribesmen, mostly subsistance farmers who raised
vegetables and other food crops.
Huts of the region are normally flimsy, stick and
thatch structures, built for inhabitants who do most of
their living out of doors.

British Seek Retaliation
LONDON (AP) — The British government has ruled
out further negotiations with Rhodesia and says it still
is considering what further steps to take aganst the
breakaway colony in retaliation for executions of black
Africans there.
“There can he no question of resuming contacts with
the illegal regimp." Commonwealth Secretary George
Thomson told parliament Monday.
Pressure on Prime Minister Harold Wilson's labor
government to act against Rhodesia increased after two
more blacks were hangpd in Salisbury Monday. Three
Africans were pxccuted last week in defiance of an order
from Quppii Elizabeth II commuting their sentences to
life in prison.
Meanwhile, snowed in at
home. Commissioner Lynch
decided he'd better clarify
his order when he learned
the courts were proceeding.
Lynch said people who live
far our and could not make It
through the snow would not
be expected to report. He
said that was what he meant
all along.
Up All Night
Lynch said he was up all
night and had nine graders
clearing roads.
Graders also were being
used In the other two county
commissioner districts.
Commissioners Ralph
Adair and J. P. Richardson,
like Lynch, directed the
grading operations from
their homes.
