COWBOYS BLOCK
ITLE PATH
Not that anything special is needed to get Oklahoma
and Oklahoma State “up" for their annual football
clash, but a rather large Item is at stake for the Sooners.
An Oklahoma victory Saturday at Lewis Field will
hand the fast-finishing Sooners a share of (he llig Light
Conference title with Kansas. The .Jayhawks are already
finished at 6-1, while OU now is 5-1.
The Cowboys have had their bright moments too
while playing one of the nation's strongest schedules.
Oklahoma State is the only team with a victory over
Houston (21-17). which leads the country in scoring, total
offense and rushing offense.
The Cowboys also chopped down Colorado impres-
sively, 31-17. That's the team which dealt OH its only
league loss, 41-27.
Oklahoma State's dandy senior quarterback Ronnie
Johnson ripped aside two long-standing school marks
last week at Kansas State, becoming the Cowboys’ all-
time one season and career passing leader.
Johnson now has fired for 2,563 aerial yards as com-
pared to 2,536 by all-American Bob Feniinore in 1943-46.
This year, Johnson has pegged for 1,410 yards, 58 more
than Don Babers died in 1951.
Ronnie needs only si* completions Saturday to top-
ple Babers’ one-season high of 121. He already holds the
career completion mark.
Three Oklahoma backs have overtaken school and
Big Eight Conference records already.
Steve Owens is the one-season rushing champion
with 1,416 yards. Eddie Hinton is the one-season passing
champ with 803 yards. Bob Warmack is the career total
offense with 4,289 yards.
Saturday, Owens needs two touchdowns to tie Bobby
Reynolds (Nebraska (1950 for the league’s season TD
mark and 73 yards to break Jim Grisham’s school rush-
ing, record, set over three seasons, and Warmack needs
17 yards to better Tim Van Galder’s (Iowa State 1964-66)
conference career passing total.
Oklahoma romped to a 38-14 victory last year.
The Sooners lead the 62-game series, 46-10-6.
