W. B. Hodges, a local berry
grower, last year made $84. off
of less than one-twelth of an acre
in strawberries^ This year the
same area will net a little less,
he finds his market right here in
Shawnee where in additien to all
the local crops gathered within a
radius of many milea around,
thousands of boxes are shipped
in every year. This aught to be
an object iesson to convince some
of the farmers who stand around
and groan most of the time about
"the down trodden tiller of the
soil," that the was to get out of
the perpetual mendicant class is
to plant something besides cot-
ton and potatoes and raise and a
roar- Another item: Young
chickens are selling at from
twenty to forty cents apiece and
hens are bringing from twenty
to fifty cents each on the local
market and eggs have been a
good price for months past. You
can feed a dozen good hens 011
vhat it takes to keep a worthless
dog and yet a great many men
who mortgage their crops to buy
meat and flour keep more dogs
than chickens. It is a positive
shame and disgrace for a country
like this to ship in a pound of
meat, flour, feed or butter, eggs,
poultry, berries, fruit or any oth-
er products of the soil or the
range and our farmers will nev-
er bo 1'ving up to their oppor-
tunities until they not only sup-
ply all the local markets with
theae things but ship out to oth-
er markets every year thousrnds
of dollars worth of these much
wanted necessaries-—Shawnee

For a Cotton Mill.
Indiahoma Farmer's Union,
which has 60,000 members in Ok-
lahoma and Indian Territory, has
evolved a p'an to locate a cotton
mill in Oklahoma. It is propos-
ed for each member of the union
to deposit one dollar towards the
accumulation of a manufacturing
fund for each bale of cotton sold.
By this means a sufficient sum
can be secured in one season to
put the enterprise on its feet,
and the second season will give
enough capital for operating and
salary expenses until the mill is
self-supporting, It seems that
the cotton raisers are now on trie
right track. The sum required
of each member is so small that
it can not work a hardship on
any one person and the system
would only have to be carried on
for a few years until there would
be enough cotton mills in the
south to entirely consume the
cotton supply.-Texas Trade Re-
view.
