MONEY MADE BY CONAN DOYLE.
English Author Has Been Well Pale
for His Work.
Literary statistics have been con>
Hitting that Sir A. Conan Doyle would
be the most richly rewarded author in
history, had all hia works been paid
at the rate quoted for his new Sher-
lock Holmes stories. "The Adven-
tures of Gerard" brought him $2 a
word. Up to and including "The
Hound of the Raskervilles," and with-
out counting the new book, which is
ucjw running serially, his takings
would have come to something like
$1,500,000. But the author has not al-
ways received $2 a word, or even the
hundredth part of that. There is a
letter in the possession of an Ameri-
can publisher embodying a proposi-
tion from the creator of Sherlock
Holmes for a contract on the basis of
a cent and a half a word. An inter-
esting feature is that the contract
was declined.
"Jim" Keene and His Employes.
James R. Keene, or "Jim" Keene,
as he ia more familiarly known in
Wall street, is by no means of a demo-
cratic nature in his dealings with his
employes. This was illustrated some
Ume ago when he discovered that in
his daily trips from his country home
at Cedarhurst, L. I., he was obliged to
travel on the same train with many of
tho humble employes of his office.
There is no Pullman on tho morning
trains, brt Mr. Keene, who objected to
the enforced association, upon a study
of the time table discovered that an
earlier train traveled between Cedar-
burst and Long Island City, and it is
stated that as a result orders were Is-
sued to the employes to take the milk
trala.
Russian Army Officers.
At the end of the year 1902 the
Russian army had 1,386 generals, of
whom 129 were "polmije generalus"
(lull geaerate), S87 lioutsnant-gener-
als and 870 major-generals. The av-
erage age of these generals was six-
ty-nine years for the "full" generals,
sixty-two years for the lieutenant-gen
orals and flfiy-slx years for the major-
gerorals. Fifty-eight per cent of all
tho generals have seen active war-
tare, and lour of them are over ninety
years of age

MANY CLAIMS TO DISTINCTION.
Long and Honorable Career of Judge
William C. Toole.
J .'lige Willlam C. Toole, who lives
. t SOB North Fourth street, St. Joseph,
Mo., has several claims to distinction.
He la Lhe oldest living citizen of St.
Joseph, having moved there In 183S.
He is the oldest lawyer in Buchanan
county, and perhaps, in Missouri, hav-
ing ljeen admitted to practice in 1848.
He is the only man living who wlt-
ne*'jed the first judicial proceeding in
Buchanan county and also the oldest
living man who has sat as judge in
that jurisdiction, having been olected
to the court of common pleaa In 1833.
He used to be a local preacher and
has preached in St. Joseph more years
than any other man.- Chicago (,'hroi/

Collects Royal Autographs.
Mrs. Astor has lately developed a
fad possible only to a woman of her
wide foreign acquaintance. It Is the
collecting of autographs of royalty. A
signed portrait of the king and queen
is the latest addition to her gallery
of sovereigns and a tete-a-tete picture
of the duke and duchess of Orleans is
another cherished souvenir of her
European travels.
Rich Gift to University.
President David Starr Jordan of Lo
land St'.nford university has present-
ed to the institution as a gift his
magnificent collection of hooks on th<
subject of ichthyelogy, on which he I
one of the leading authorities of the
world. The collection contains in the
neighborhood of 3,000 volumes and is
undoubtedly one of the finest In ex-
Isteace.
Rugs in Place of Carpets,
Even in the houses of tho poor in
New York city the carpot—that Is,
the kind tacked to the floor, is rapid-
ly being supplanted by the cleaner
and more urtistic rug. Since tho set-
tlement workers have become active
over on the Blast Side all kinds of re-
forms calculated to exterminate germ
life have been instituted. Painted
walls are preferred for this reason
over cheap wall paper, because they
do not hold dust and germ life. In
all the big office buildings carpets
have been entirely discarded for the
polished hardwood floor.
Blindness Threatens English Poet.
William Watson, the English poet,
has been having much trouble with
his eyes of late. Fears are expressed
that his sight Is on the point of giving
out, in spite of the fact that he is only
46. Watson's last published poeru'
was his "Ode on the Coronation of
King Edward YJI.," which was admit-
tedly one of his most notable produc-
tions of recent years.

Her Souvenir.
This story was told on one of the
yachts yesterday: "When Sir Thomas
came over here the first time he
brought a lot of handsome silverware
and other valuable things on the Erin.
Almost everybody who went to that
yacht wanted a souvenir and took
one. A young lady had to grab one
hurriedly, and when she got home
she found she had a pair of pajamas."
