NOT MARCO TWAIN.
An Amusing Incident of a Truveler'e
Visit to Venice.
Tho most striking feature of St.
Mark's in Venice, is tho profusion of
mosaics, which are said to cover
fifty thousand square fcot, and nre
much like faded paintings in appear,
anco. High up in the facade is th«
Lion of St Mark, which one sees re-
peated in every material and manner.
Tho author of "College Tramps"
gives an experience with a guido
which suggests that Italians do not
appreciate Aniorican humorists, says
Youth's Companion.
We passed out, he says, into the
square, glancing, as we went, at the
work of several artists who wero
busily putting upon their canvas the
image of the gorgeous interior.
While in the cathedral, our guide,
who was pointing out and explaining
the different objects of interest,
waved his hand toward tho magnifi-
cent bronze altar, and whisperod im-
pressively, "Gentlemen, at 'ee bpttom
under zis grande altare, repose ze
great San Marco, ze patron of Vene-
zia. He is brought here from Alex-
andreea, one thousand year."
"Ah," said N , "he is the gen-
tleman who owned the lion. Is—ia
he dead?"
The guide's face grew livid, and
his hand flew for his stiletto—it may
have been for his handkerchief, his
hand flow somewhero, anyway.
"Is you call Marco Twain?"he asked
"No," replied the trembling N ,
"my name is not Mark Twain."
The guide kindly refrained from
further demonstrations, but muttered:
"Zat Marco Twain have made one big
fool of ze guide profession in Italia,
and all ze guide havp conjurationed
to keel him, soon as ho come once
more."
N was his most patient audita#
for the rest of the morning.

UtrraniK Ok, Oct 3.—The Dalton
gang, who have bwn vevj bold since
they defeated the otlicers i:i the Ing-

nights ago when they appeared in a
gang at Cushing and all attended
an oyster supper given by the Iadies
of the church there. They left their
arms outside, pa'ronU.ed "th.> tables
liberally, and conducted tne.. rives

It is needless to remiu-k, though, l hat
they enjoyed themselves more than

PEACE ON EARTH.
How Two Woman Mot After a Long
Separation.
They met in the calm of a lovely
day. Soft breezes whispered sweot
mossages to the budding treos, and
even the salesman at the bargain
counter woro a moro charitable look.
They met and greeted, says the
Detroit Tribune.
"Ob, dear," exclaimed the lady in
grenadine with gilt trimmings, "it's
an age since I saw you."
"Yes, indoed," ectsatically re-
joined the lady in white organdie witl
pale blue flowers wrought in thy
fabric. "It was getting almost in-
supportable. "
A pause of one-sixteenth of a sec-
ond ensued.
"Well, I declare, if—"
Tho lady in grenadine was gazing
fixedly at tho lady in organdie.
—"gray hair isn't positively be-
coming to you. Isn't it perfectly de-
lightful? I am so glad; gray hair is
such a trial to many."
"Yes, to bo sure."
There was an ither paaso.
"I'm so glad"
The lady in or lie was earnestly
contemplating tht uly in grenadine.
— "you are still t • t" make your
dresses lit in spite I your getting aoi
fleshy. Isn't it iirt matv? 1J.g
such a thorn to mo t poind.
"Yes."
Thore was a little more silence.
"Well, good-bye," chirped thu
lady in grenadine.
"Bye," cooed tho lady in organdie.
"I hopo it won't bo so long till wo
meet, again."
"Oh, my, yes. I couldn't stand it.

I never really llkod leopards. Mr.

fatal to fowls. On the other hand I

moro than IS > human b -ings. Such
a murderous boast nover came with-
in my cogni/.anee, though 1 fear that
the story was true.
As a rule, a man doos not go out
leopard-hunting as he goes snipe-
shooting or tiger-shooting. Usually
tho news is brought by an excited
and affrighted native that a leopard
has entorcd his premises, and, after
killing his child, or a goat or a fowl,
has hid itself in some shod or out-
house. On such an appeal it is
usual to go out and try to kill
that leopard. If a companion can bo
found, it is bettor for two men to go
together, than for ono man to go
alono with only nativo followers. Al-
most the first cane that 1 reiuorabor
to which we were called, we found
that tho leopard was ensconsod in a
mat and thatch cowshed, of which
the door had been closed on him. Wo
rather rashly opened tho door in
order to peep in. There was a rush
and a souffle, as tho leopard tore the
door open wider and jumped out to
escape. Wo were lucky in not being
knocked down or even scratched.
Hut tho leopard did not get right
away. It foolishly entered another
shed, which was promptly closod on
him, and we ha 1 to begin again. My
companion climbed on to the roof
with his gun, and an active native
got up with him to tear open a hole
in the thatch of the roof. I stood on
the ground with a clear space before
me, in case the leopard should t*rn
out in my direction. Tho eager
crowd of natives, who hal como. re-
gardless of danger, was induced to
retire to a distance, while the most
nimble of them climbed up into trees
or onto the roofs of the adjacent
huts. It takes longer to write this
than to give an idea of what actually
happened. The native who was
tearing a hole in the thatch of the
shed had rashly tried to look in to
see \vho:e the leopard was. In a
moment tho le ipard sprang at him,
and its head appeared through the
thatch. My companion put his gun
to the beast's head and sont a bullet
through its braiu so that it dropped
dead into tho hut.
Hut there wero loud cries from tho
nativo on the roof, for the bullet,
after passing through tho leopard \s
skull, had grazed tho man's body,
so that he was bleeding profusely
and crying out that he was killed,
lie was quickly brought down from
tho roof of the shed, and his wound
was washed, and found to be little
more tnan skin-deep. A present of
a few rupees soon comforted him,
and ho tieeame. not undoservedly,
the hero of tho day among his fel-
low villagers. Tho carcass of the
leopard was slung from a bamboo
and brought to our house, and tho
skin became tho property of my com-
panion.
As a rule it is b?st to shoot loop
ards on fojt. tho alternative bMng
to shoot them from tho howdah on
the back of an elephant. There are
sovoral rea ons for this, given by a
writer in ongman's Magazine. In
the first place, when a man is on
foot, and can post himself judicious
ly so as to get a clear shot, the
leopard is moro likely to come out,
as it is wanted to come, as soon as
tho beaters begin to try to drive it,
with their sticks and clubs and
shouts, in the direction indicated.

Still it is hotter to be on foot than

with our twelve elephants we
searched for it for nearly an hour
among bushes that would hardly
have hidden a hare.
In front of us was a large tank full
of water, which the leopard could
not have swam across without being
seen. My elephant was rather in
front and had reached the top of the
bank of the tank. Tho mahout, dis-
gusted and tired, was sitting loosely,
with his feet out of the stirrups; and

Another day, when out with the
lieutenant-governor of Bengal, we
found a leopard, which ran and hid

a dozen men were brought up to

we saw it no inoro.

Dreamers sometimes answer cities-

A lady had a summer cottage on
an island in Muskoka. Ono night
her sons were storm-stayed on tho
mainland, and a young English vis-

sion that Indians might visit tho
house while their protectors were
absent.
In tho night the hostess was sud-
denly rousod by some ono clutching!
her arm, and when she opened her
oyos she saw her guest standing by
tho bedside.
"Oh, Mrs. Laughjon! Mrs. Laugh-
ton!" oxclaimcd tho girl in a hoirse
whisper, "there's a man at the win-
dow—an Indian, lie's gone to get
somothing to climb in by."
Tho next moment Eva was fumb-
ling about on tho lloor.
"What are you doing?" asked Mrs.
l.aughton.
"I have some liniment in my
valise," was tho answor. "I'm going
to got it out, and when ho puts his
head through tho window again I'll
throw it in his eyes."
Mrs. l.aughton, who was not ner-
vous, boga.. to laugh, but Eva paid no
attention, and prosently asked:
"Where's tho button-hook?"
"What do you want it for?"
'•Why, Mrs. Laughton," said Eva
aloud, and in a very indignant tono,
"do you think I would allow myself
to be seen anywhere with my shooa
unbuttoned? No man would respect
that kind of a girl."
In the morning when Mrs. I.augh-

room to Eva's bed she saw the girl
