ULTIMATUM TO SPAIN,
President McKinley de-
mands Cuba's Freedom
And an Indemnity,
The war is low almost beyond
the stage where it can be prevented
Last evening news was flashed
over the wires that Gen. Woodford,
our minister to Spain had been re-
called from Madrid, and that all
foreigners had been ordered out of
Havana.
This can mean nothing but war.
On Thursday the president prom-
ised that if congress would give
him till Monday he would either
have Cuba free by negotiation or
he would consent for congress to
declare war. He sent an ultimatum
to Spain. He demanded absolute
independence for Cuba and an in-
demnity for the destruction of the
Maine. He gave until yesterday
evening for a decision, It is learn-
ed that Spain refused to comply
with his demands. If this be true
the ball will open at once. Con-
gress will not be triffled with any
longer and the president has been
forced to push matters.

Captain Barrett informs us that
every one of the thirty four men in
Company P. is ready to start for
Cuba or for the coast when called
for. It looks very much like they
would be called for, and Shawr.ee
will never have any cause to blush
for the acts of her soldiers.
Bryan Can't Come.

Mr. Bryan's answer, from which

No sensible man would want to
hold the good citizens of Tecumseh
responsible for taking that petition
away from Mr. Kerwin. But there
is a considerable class of men there
who approve of just such work,
let those good people now see to it
that such things do not happen
again, Of course Shawnee can
take care of her self and her people
and such breaks as this at Tecum-
seh do not hurt us.
Goods Recovered.
Thursday night Mr. Meek found
his stolen goods in the house of
Win. Phelps. Phelps was arrested
about 10 o'clock while playing on
the stage at the Klondike theatre
at the Cuban benefit. He gave
bond. We understand he claims
that the things were stolen by some
one and traded to him.
