NO CHANGE,
NO REPORT,
Everything In Doubt.
The papers are filled with such
headlines as "Spain Backs Down''
"More Spanish Soldiers for Cuba"
"Cuba Must Be Free &c."
One paper stated that the presi-
dent has already given Spain till
May 1st to end the war in Cuba.
This means, we suppose that Spain
will be given that long to starve
the remainder of the Cuban wo-
men and children to death.
Senators have been holding cau-
cuses and after counting noses
have decided not to adjourn until
the Maine disastor is definitely set-
tled. They further decided that
the moment the president showed
a disposition to refer the Main dis-
aster to diplomatic agencies a reso-
lution acknowledging the indepen-
dence of Cuba will be introduced
and passed.
These men claim that Speakeri
Reed cannot prevent the house;
from adopting the same resolution, j
At any rate the old distrust that
the president iB delaying matters at
the dictation of a syndicate bent on
making Cuba pay several hundred
millions of bonds issued to force
her to submit to the yoke of Spain.
This syndicate goes so far as to
demand that the United States
force Cuba to accept the terms of-
fered by Spain, if Spain refuses to
sell Cuba.
Spain is still hurrying troops to
Cuba.
Meanwhile the Naval Court of
Inquiry drags its session along and
may be only killing time. The
people will soon become restless
again and it will be necessary to
invent some other excuse for delay.
