In the Southland bright and free, was : Jr
a city by the sea B
With its many thousand people glad Q
and gay, 92
Not a thought had they of fear, or I w
that danger was so near, H
But a mighty storm was gathering on
the bay; Ej>
When the waves came rolling high Qj
many feared lest they should die,
And affrighted and horror-stricken V'
stood Q
But no human power could save, from *
the fury of the wave, V
And they perished in the tempest and U
the flood. i <Pv
Chorus— Q
Many the hearts that are aching X
today, |
Many the homes that are sad, Q
Weeping for those who were lost in #5
the bay, M
Remembered forever, though dead. Q
In the waters rushing wild, was the j
mother and the.child,
The rich and poor alike their fate did
share;
They called and called again, but their
pleadings were in vain.
y et, hoping still, they dying prayed
this prayer:
"Oh, Thou who stilled the sea, on the
stormy Gallilee,
Save us: save us, from the tempest ^
and the flood." | *
But the waves came rushing on, and j 3jE
the struggling went down j V
And their trembling spirits went to
meet their God. j X
Many wailings of despair in the dark- *
r.ess rent the air
As the cruel storm its fury did un-
fold;
Thousands sank beneath the wave,
where they found a watery grave,
But not half the woe and anguish can
be told.
They are sleeping in the bay, waiting
for the Judgment day,
But their souls have reached a bright
and hapoy home,
In a land of pure delight, where the
sky is always bright,
And no cruel storms and floods can
ever come.
(NOTE. This song was written j
Sept. 15, 1900, just after the great
storm in which some 5000 people lost
Their lives. Mr. Buchanan, the author,
has kindly given it to us to publish,
for which we thank him.—Editor).

ADVISED TO HOLD CORN.
By United Press.
LINCOLN, NEB., Sept. 2. To
guard against the poor seed corn dan-
ger, Nebraska farmers are being ad-
vised by the department of experimen-
tal agronomy of the University of
Nebraska, to keep at least a part of
their supply of last year's seed corn
as an emergency supply.
With corn throughout the state
backward this year there is danger
that it will be soft, and with the pos-
sibility that it may not ripen pro •
perly there is the danger, experienced
a few years ago, that it mav not ger-
minate aftr being planted, and so be
worthless for seed.
While the corn crop in this state is
backward, due to tne cool summer,
a good crop is expected. This corn,
while it probably will be soft, grain
experts say, will nevertheless make
-ood stock feed, and it is expected
that heavy feeding of live stock in
this state will be one of the results of
the backward crop.

It is certainly surprising that any
