The wind had been blowing a gale,
but later it calmed down and every-
body expected a cyclone. Instead,
however, a tremendous downpour of
rain came, falling, not in drops, but
by the bucketful. The dry prairie
could not absorb the moisture and

utes. Skeleton creek became a roar-
ing torrent. The persons who were
drowned tried to cross the stream and
get home, but the buggy wheel struck
a stone and tilted the buggy, throw-

The drouth which has been so gen-
eral throughout M county for the past
month was suddenly broken up the
early part of last week by a water
spout on the border of the state and
in the northern part. The Salt Fork
of the Cimmaron, which crosses the
county from the west to the east about
twelve miles from the Kansas line waa
clear out of its banks and sweeping a
raging torrent across the bottoms.
It carried with it ricks of hay, cords of
wood and the out buildings of the set-
tlers, upon its banks. Not less than
fifty families were washed out of all
they had and are now camping along
the stream on the highlands back of
channel. Tho smaller creek called
the Driftwood, which runs into the
Salt Fork on the north side, with a
channel not over thirty feet wide,
stretched out over the country until
it was a mile across it. There was a
report according to the settlers on the
bank, a rise of about ten feet in an
hour. All the crops have been swept
away and distress is sure to follow
Among the families who lost their
house and were swept out, are those
of Rader and Hyde who are incarcer-
ate.1 in the county jail on the charge
of burglary and house-breaking. What
makes it worse is that, the children
are all sick with the scarlet fever. The
people who are more fortunate and
living on higher ground ure doing all
in their power to alleviate the imme-
diate ueeds of the ones without homes,
passed through the tunnel, filling it !
with smoke. A second east bound 1
freight train was allowed to enter
the tunnel, contrary to tlio rules •<!
the road, and the engineer being un-
able, on account of the dense smoke
left by the passenger train, to dis-
tinguish the lights from the train
from the lights on the walls of the
tunnel, went into it with a crash.
A fearful disaster was the result,
both trains were badly wrecked. The
tunnel was blocked anil two men
killed outright and three seriously in-
jured.

in charge of the. signal lights at the
