Profits and Prices
Profits may be considered
from two angles:
1st—Their effect on prices;
2nd—ks a return to investors.
*
When profits are small as
compared with sales, they have
little effect on prices.
Swift & Company’s profits
are only a fraction of a cent
per pound on all products sold,
and if eliminated entirely
would have practically no
effect on prices.
Swift & Company paid 10
per cent dividends to over 20,000
stockholders out of its 1917
profits. It also had to build
extensions and improvements
out of profits; to finance large
stocks of goods made necessary
by unprecedented requirements
of the United States and Allied
Governments; and to provide
protection against the day of
declining markets. 0
\
Is it fair to call this
profiteering ?

Thii war is to be won not by
one man or one thousand men or
one million -men. or one mill.on
people. It is to be won by the
united el forts of the individuals
of many nations.
Every Amer.can citizan has
an individual duty to perform,
an individual share of the re-
sponsibi ity. The more power-
ful and effective the American
forces are the shorter will be1 the
war, the shorter the war the
fewer thq lives lost, the greater
the number of American so'diers
who will return home victorious.
Every American who econo ni-

who increases production, who
saves and lends savings to the
Government, does somell ing to
help win the war.

B. L. TISINGER ;
Justice of the Supreme Court . i
B. L. Tisinger, of Mangum, Greer County, Oklahoma, was recently ap i
pointed Justice of the Supreme Court from fhe Fourth Supreme Court distrle j
to succeed Justice Ghas. M. Thacker, deceased.
He is a candidate for Justice Thacker’s unexpired term, subject to th- i
will t&f the democratic voters of the district at the primary election on Angus'- ( ;
and asks that he be permitted to hold for the unexpired term the office to whicl j
he was recently appointed.
He did, not solicit the appointment, but accepted it when It was offered ti j
him, giving up his private practice as a lawyer and moving to Oklahoma < ’it,' i
The appointment was in line with any lawyer's ambition, and Justice Tisinger
and his friends are proud that he was considered worthy of such high honor
He submits to the fairwinded democratic voters of the district, made up of the
counties of Beaver, Beckham, Cimarron, Dewey, Ellis, Greer, Harper, Major,
Roger Mills, Texas, Woods and Woodward, that if he is equally as well
qualified and as competent as other aspirants, his candidacy should be favorably
considered by them and he should be nominated for the unexpired' term.
Justice Tisinger Is a native of Georgia and a life-long democrat. With the
exception of the two years he was Mayor of tlie City of Mangum, several years
ago, he has never before sought or held public office in Oklahoma. Ho has been
engaged in the active practice of the law for over thirty years, the past eleven

ami his qualifications for the'offlce he now holds he refers to any lawyer of his
acquaintance and to any judge before whom he lias appeared.
