Tuesday night of this week,
this country was visited by one
of the biggest rains that we
have had this year. For awhile,
it almost assumed the propor-
tions of a cloudburst. There was
considerable wind and some hail
with the rain. The hail was
heaviest out two or three miles
east of Carter, according to re-
B. R. Watdrop returned the j Ports coming in. It is also re-

Singing Convention
The Beckham County Singing
Convention met with the Car-
ter class at the Methodist Church
last Sunday. Although it had
rained the night before and the
weather was very threatening
the house was full and many out
side. A big basket dinner was
spread at noon and was enjoyed
by all present. The singing was
fine there being classes present
from all over the county. The
next convention will be held at
Kempton the fifth Sunday in
December.

This week has been very wet
and rainy and very little has
been accomplished in the way of
cotton picking. It is to be hoped
that next week will be fair so
that the school children may
pick as much cotton as possible
while school is suspended.

[even higher than it was two
weeks ago, and an additional;
seven foot rise is reported com-'
ing down. The railroad bridge, I
seriously weakened and dama-
ged by the recent high water is
expected to go out at any time
Train service it tied up again,
but crews are busy trying to
save the bridge. Telegraph
wires are down, hence no reports
as to track conditions elsewhere
on the line are available. The
wagon bridge south of town has
not been repaired since the re-
cent rains when several spans
were washed out. It is expected
that additional spans will go out
today. Considerable damage
was doye to bridges and roads.
In several cases school trucks
and mail carriers were unable to
make their routes.
It is not thought that the hail
did serious damage to crops ex-
cept in spots where it was heavi-
est. Cotton has been late open-
ing, and this probably prevented
more serious damage.
We also had a good rain Sat-
urday night. This assures plenty
of moisture for wheat and means
e good wheat pasture for this
fall and winter. This will be fine
for farmers with lots of stock
as feed will be scarce. However
a spell of dry weather is badly
