found a glass of tea at his plate
containing a penny for each
birthday he had passed. His
plate too was piled with presents.
The occassion was enjoyed by all

Proclamation By Mayor Stow-
ers To People Of Carter
Iu the wisdom of Almighty
God, Warren Gamaliel Harding,
president of the United States,
has been taken from us.
The nation mourns the loss of
its president; the statesman loses
his counsel; the business man
misses his guiding hand, and the
laborer loses his friend.
His private life was marked
with gentleness and brotherly
love, yet firm without a fault.
Grief fills the heart of all Ameri-
ca, and reverence for his labors
shall ever be our aim.
Now, therefore, I, J. L. Stow-
ers, mayor of Carter, do appoint
Friday, August 10, 1923, at the
hour of 3 o'clock p. m. as the
hour of mourning and prayer
throughout Carter.
I sincerely ask that the people
of Carter cease their labors and
close their places of business
from the hour of 3:00 p. m to 4:30
p. m., and with bowed heads of-
fer a word of silent prayer in
reverence to the memory of our
great and good president.
In witness whereof, I have
hereunto set my hand and seal
tl is 8th day of August, in the
year of our Lord 1923.
J. L. Stowers.
