POLITICAL NOTES
“This preposed Tnylur eluc
lion hiw is expensive,” says Con-
gressmen Biek Morgan, SfCond
District of Okialii'ina. 4 The peo-
ple are now burdened with tax-
es. In forcing legislation the
cost should always be counted.
No wonder the aopronriations by
one legislature aggregates the
apaliing sum of nearly S7.0;;i',-
(10. Shall there be no end to
this? Shall our taxes go on in-
creasing from year to year? If
s i, free governn ent is a failure.
The people are willing to defray
i.ll expenses of good government,
but are unwilling to pay one cent
that is unnecessary.
•‘The prnpiised el< ;t
poses additional taxes upon the
people. This in itself is suffi-
t ient to justify the people in vol
ing against the measure, “he

simplify our laws, and our gov-
ernment and reduce the cost of

unconcerned about public affairs’:'

brings additional taxes and bur-
dens with no corresponding ben-
efits and advantages.
so with statt' money, out of his
contingent expense fund.
What do the urohibit'on farm
ei’s of Oklahoma, in fact, any tax
paying farmer, think of the pres-
ent whiskey ring scandal in this
state, when the big breweries of
the country are fighting openly
for the bootleg business in pro-
hibition Oklahoma? What do
they think of the appointment <>i
a mnnfas prohibition enforcement
(official who has been a close
friend of the state agent of the
[him Brewing comnany, the
company that supplies the state
dispen: ary with official beer and
which is charged also with hav
ing a protected monopoly on tht
bootleg trade of this state.
T^e fun will come at Oklahoma
city next Tuesday, when the
state board of agriculture meets
to pass unon the recomrnenda
tions for locating district agri-
cultural schools in the third,
fourth and fifth supreme court
judicial districts. In each in-
stance the schools were located
by one man, without any approv-
al whatever, and without theoth
or towns and cities that were ap
plicants being given a. hearing
The locations were made direct
from Governor Haskell's office,
irrespective of the rights of oth-
er applicants or what they had

In the stale school land de-
partment there is one employe
who draws §100 per month for
doing nothing else than carrying
ihe department’s mail to and
from the state house. There is
no check whatever on the expen-
ditures of the school land de-
partment, and every cent spent
lessens the amount which should
go toward the maintenance of
the common schools.
Governor Haskell recently sub-
scribed for a magazine, the so-
licitor for subscriptions claim-
ing that if he secured two hun-
dred, he could secure a scholar-
ship in any school he desired to
enter. After it developed that
the governor paid for the maga-
zine by drawing a voucher on his
criminal executive fund, thus
making the state pay for his as
sumed generosity. It. also de-
veloped that Rev. E. D. Cameron,
state superintendent of public
instruction, also subscribed for
the magazine, and paid for it al-
Stnrtling are the tax disclos-
ures in Canadian county! Tht
same will be discovered by tin
tax payers in every county when
an investigation is made. The
combined tax levy in that county
is *22] mills or §2.27) on every
hundred dollars worth of prop-
erty, actual valuation, the total
will be one-tliird larger than last
year's taxes. Canadian county
alone will pay §7)5,000 into the
state treasury as taxes. “Yes,
taxes will bo less,” as promised
by the democrats in the last
campaign.
One joint, keeper in Oklahoma
Ci'y borrowed money for carfare
to that city, immediat'ly after
statehood. For awhile lie worked
for one other join test. He then
branched out for himself. To-
day he lias a thriving business,
pays no revenue iii the way of Ii
cense, has a stiff bank account
and owns a business block, all
made from the illegal sale of
whiskey since statehood and in a
prohibition state where law en-
f >rcement is a joke.
