Eye AVilncss Tells of Naval Bat-
tle in British West Indies.
The British government will prob-
ably point to the attitude of Germany
toward ships transferred to Ameri-
can registry. In a cablegram to the
state department on December 28,
Ambassador Gerard thus informed the
American state department as to the
German attitude.
The Imperial Foreign Office was
asked if there would be objection tb
the exchange of cotton for German
products on a vessel formerly regist-
ered as British, but transferred to
American registry since the begin-
ning of the war.

PREACHER TOOK A CHURCH.
A New Jersey Congregation Sues Pas-
tor to Get Building.
New York, aJn. 15.—Because ho
failed to get $5,000 representing six
years’ back salary as pastor of Christ
Church, Gospel Methodist, on Logan
avenue, Jersey City, the Rev. William
P. Brush took a deed to the church
property in lieu of his claim, it was
conveyed to him by his son, William
P. Brush, Jr., one of the trustees of
the church.
A faction of the congregation op-
posed tp Mr. Brush asked Vice Chan-
cellor Griffin in the chancery cham-
bers to set aside the deed on the
ground that it was obtained fraudu-
lently. The court reserved decision.
Mr. Brush became pastor of the
church June 23, 1907. The complain-
ants charged in their bill that he at
once began to conduct the affairs of
the church “in a high-handed and au-
tocratic manner.” The church was
known at that time as the Christian
Church of the Living God. Three:
years ago the pastor changed the-
name to Christ Church, Gospel Meth*
odist. He admitted on tlie witness
stand that he knows of no other church
of this sect in the world.
