As we said in this paper a short
time ago the threat of the Empire
company to move from the city
was probably made to forestall
such a fight on the increase in gas
rates that the Bartlesville Gas Co.
has intended to put through. It
is true the cainpany notified the
people that they were going to ask
for a raise but the date for a
hearing was not well advertised,
if evrn mentioned, and no one
knew when the hearing was to be
and so ofcourse there was no pro.
test made. We have asked sev
eral tfnies through this paper to
have the local company explain
why they protest on paying tax
es on an assessment of two hun.
Jred thousand dollars and have
brought suit in the district court
tor a refnnd and jet put up to the
people and corporation commis-
sion that they are making no
lirofits, but the profits they want
is on a boud issue of TWO MIL.
1-lON DOLLAR8 which the
records at the court house will
show, and that is what they ask
for of the corporation commission.
The shooting of the chief of
police in Dewey Sunday night,
followed by a mob burning six
teen homes of negro*, is a dis-
grace that the good people of
the city should not be blamed
for, It waa not the work of the
enraged eitizens but the work of
some roughnecks who, perhaps
are not as good citizens as those
whose homes they burned. It
was the duty of the city officials
to hare sto 'ped the work of burn
ing houses but we are informed
that they made no effort to re
•train the work of the boys who
are the guilty ones The mayor
and city are responsible for the
loss and when the time cornea
for paying the damages, which
will be in due time, it will not
seem so funny. If those direct-
ly responsible could be made to
foot the bill it would be different
but the citizens in general, the
good people of the city, will have
to help pay the damages For
merly there were no bad negros
in Dewey and if they are there
now it is because the city officials
have parmitted them to locate
there. Dewey has been run on
the liberal order for several
years and now as a consequence
one of her good citizens has been
murdered and a mob destroyed
much property among which was
• church which should have been
the last thing thought of. The
mob waa on the same order aa
the Germans who delight in sell-
ing churches and hospitals. A
five-year term in the pen would
propably take some of the wild
ideas out of the heads of those
who took part in the affair.

Chamber of Commerce gave them
their permission and the directors
of the Chamber of Commerce
were the herds of the various de-
partment* of the Daugherty in-
terests. It is time to sever con
nections with co-purattom* from
city organizations. No man can

j business cares to locate in it or in.
' vest in property where a single
corporation controls the affairs of
the city. It is time Bartlesville
begin to act and be independent,
and not bow down to any onr
company or man because they
do business in the city. The oth
er people have rights and inter
ests which should be protected.
An ad in a weekly paper which
«x>mes to this office and is pub-
lished not more than sixty miles
from this city, in Oklahoma,
quotes the retail price of navy
beans at sixteen cents per pound
or one cent less than the whole-
sale price allowed by the price-
fixing committee in this city.
Eggs are twenty-five cents per
dozen retail and spring fryers
twenty five cents per pound We
are informed that the price-fixing
committee have increased the
prices more than the price re-
ceived by the grocers. If that
is the best they can do it is time
for them to take a vacation.
The most forgotten man in the
country now is the fellow who
got the daylight savings law
passed. Of all fads which have
been imposed on the American
people that ia the most useless.
It has not saved anything and it
robs people of the best hour’s
sleep of the night and does not
save in any manner light or fuel.
We believe that it was a German
idea to retard the efficiency of
the American people.
A good way to economize would
be for the county Council of De-
fense to order the sign on the
court house discontinued during
the war and the money the coun-
t' pays out for it be put into war
savings stamps
The price of sole leather has
been fixed by the price fixing
committee. It runs from 34
cents to 90 cents. The kind that
is put on most shoes, we presume
is the 34 cent kind, though it was
claimed to cost up to the present
time, $1.25.
Some people who have been
away all summer will be surpris-
ed when they hear our local
band. It is the best one Bartles-
ville has ever had.
The fact that 4‘over there”
ther call a Ford a “camionette”
won’t interfere to any extent
with the senatorial campaign in
Michigau. Nobody knows wheth-
er a “camionette” is a knock or
