■'lonij I.tat Waste Paper
Ti)e state of Kails s has dis
covered a new source of revenue.
It has just sold a car of scrap
l«tl>er for bout three Hundred
dollars The exact.figures have
not been reported yet as the
cash has not been sent by the
pa >er mill that bought the scrap.
But there was nearly 21 tons uf
paper in the car justs:, ipped, t e
exact weight bein^ 41,700
pounds.
E'er a tfood many years the
waste pa j ter of the state house
was tfattiered up and put into
sacks and a man was paid to ha ,1
it away. Then a Topeka man
found wnere he could Sell waste
p per so he offered to take it
away for nothing. Then a iiitle
later this chap began paying the
state eighteen dollars a month
for the pri ilege of hauling it
away.
A. G. Han hack, custodian of
the state house, decided that if
this chap cou d afford to pay mon-
ey for the paper that likely the *
state could get someth ng out o!
it too. He began investigating
and found that waste pajier was
worth from two to thirty cents a
pound. He persuaded the state
executive council to buy a paper
baler for thirty dollars and a
room was fixed up in the base- L’
me t. The first carload of paper '.
was not sorted and as a result
only a comparatively low price
was secured. The baler h s been
in operation since last .January.
One car has just been sole md
there is nearly another car aled
and ready to be shipped
