The Horticultural Picnic.
The picnic held at the farm of 11
Kleiner, eleven mile# southwost of
the city yesterday was a decided suc-
cess. It was the regular monthly
meeting of the agricultursl and horti
cultural society, with a basket dinner
and a fruit exhibit added. About
200 people were present, and not one
who attended will say that it waa not
a pleasant affair.
But pleasure was not all there was
in the meeting, for the fruit growers
profited from the fruit exhibit and
from the discussions.
thk fbuit ixHinrr.
More than fifty specimens of fruit
wero exhibited, all very flne. Tho
discussions that took place over the
fruit tables wero interesting and de-
veloped the fact that several of the
,bost specimens of peaches were seed-
lings, also, that but few growers
know tho names of their fruit. The
exhibitors were as follows;,
11. Kleiner: Chinese cling peach,
Heath free, Crawford's early and
Chickasaw plum.
j. H. lluddlcson: Crawford's early
peach,White cling of Chinese variety.
Qeorge Fowler: Yellow nectarine.
D. A. Shriver; Crawford's early
peach.
J. 11. Ellis: Mountain llose peach,
Thurber peach, Chinese cling, Si-
beria and an unknown variety extra
fine.
Wm. Lewis: Boston nectarines.
D. Noonan; European wine grape
very fine, name unknown.
C. A. McNabb: Concord grapes.
E. P. Burnardin: Crawford's early
pcach grown in Texaa, exhibited to
show the superiority of the Oklahoma
grown, in color and tlavor.
D. C. Lewis: Crawford's early,
North Btar and Foster peaches.
J. T. Lawsou: Missouri pippin
and Maiden blush apples;] yellow
seedling cling, (very line) and red
freestone seedling (also very line )
A. J. Lawson: White seedling peach,
(very tine.)
John Zysett: Extra large and line
seedling clingstone pcach.
J, A. Flattery: California seedling
(resembling the finest specimens of
Crawford's early budded,) Niagara
grapes, and Pennsylvania red stroak
apples.
W. U. Mann: Crawford's early,
and fine seedling pead.es.
O, W. WUel: Fostor and Chinese
cling peaches.
1). W. Jones: Delaware, Elvira,
Concord, Martha and l'ocklington
grapes, Ohio seedling apple, and
line Beedling peach.
Vinoont Anderson: MountainKose,
Smock, Heath's freestone, Alexander
(canned,) Snow, Crawford's late,
Stump and Susqucliana peaches.
W. Tompkins; Maiden blush ap
pies, Smock, Stump and unknown
variety peach.
Soule, on "The Agricultural Pretts;"
H. Kl 1 1b, on "Peach Culture;" O. A.
McNabb, on "The Farmer's Flower
Oarden;'E. P. Bernardin, "Spring
Planting versus Fall Planting."
The addresses were all good, and
were listened to with a great deal of
Interest.
A vote of thanks was extended .o
Mr. B. Kleiner, E. E. Browu and all
those who assisted In making the
meeting a success.
Too much can not he said In praise of
Mr. Kleiner and his estimable family
for thei' eflotts to make the meeting
a success.
No finer basket dinner was ever
spread before a picnic party* Every
farm vehicle brought baskets laden
with all the delicacies the farms af-
ford, and the townspeople took ice,
lemons and sugar for a co'd beverage,
The next meeting will be held
about September, probably In the
Trosper neighborhood. It Is Intended
to make this meeting the most Inter-
esting cf All. More fruit and nearlv
all vegetable) will be matured at that
time, and It will be possible to make
aline display. The exuet time and
place will bo given as soon as deter-
mined.
