4 O«o4 Story About Three Nam«U«
tioes of tho Peace.
A good story Is told by the New York
Bun of the adventure of three P01^®
Justices and a detective employed by
one of the societies whose operation*
are Intended to brace up the law. I*
seems that shortly before the holiday
i season began a man who had heeJI

er. ^ I leaving his family almost wholly na-
Trib- proviii,',] for. llis home had been hand-
somely furnished, and the widow, com-
pelled to move into more economical
quarters, determined to sell the heavier
' articles of furniture. Three membcri
of the board of police justices took a
hand in the sale. Among other devioaa
lor helping their friend', widow win a

tiees organized the friendly jnterprise,
promoted the -4.1. of ticket, and when j
a sum representing the value of several
sod* pianos hud boon (fathered in, they
supenntenued the drawing.
This took place one evening in a Uar
lom store. That was where the detect-
ive came In, though some people are
bold enough to say that it was Com*
stock himself. At all events, tlie
guardian of morality, whatever his
name, thought he saw a chance for a
grand coup, and accordingly descended
upon the store, made his way through
the Interested crowd, and formally ar-
rested the three justices for conducting
a lottery. The detective might have
been a martyr to his seal if blank won*
dcrment had not paralyzed the spec-
tators and before indignation could as- j
eert itself the justices had mastered the
situation. A police justice is author-
ized to hold court at any place and tune
to that occasion may require. The de-
tectivc had forgotten this, but the three '
Justices hadn't, and one of them having
mounted a table, openejl court and sum- j
